Still using a pair of 5D Mark III’s.
They’re tanks.
I may purchase a pair of 5D Mark IVs as it’s the end of the line for the DSLR.
Why purchase…… built like tanks…
They work.
Then I can make the jump to Mirrorless.
Just thinking out loud…

It's hard to go wrong with the 5D4. If you are like me, you will be pretty amazed at the upgrade vs. 5D3.

I went from the 5DII to the 5DIV and the 5DIV pretty much addressed everything I needed. It's a near perfect camera for me. Now, if there was some way I could get a 5DIV coupled with a 150-600 lens shrunk down to something that can be carried in a pocket.. Perfection. :)

My upgrade route was 450D, 5D, 7D, 5D3, 5D4, and now the R5. The 5D4 was enough camera for my needs, but active face-tracking through the viewfinder and finally being able to ditch the AFMA shenanigans made the move to mirrorless a no-brainer for me.

Given the R6II announcement and significantly improved software on the R6II/R7, it's reasonable we will get an R5II soon.

If something close to the rumored specs are true, Canon will be in a great position v/v Sony. I was surprised the A7R5 announcement did not include a stacked sensor and higher frame rates.

The R5II will certainly include all of the software improvements from the R6II/R7 such as improved AF system and controls, preshooting, etc. IMO if it is 45-61 MP, 20+ fps ES, and has improved heat control for videography Canon will have a good follow up to the R5. If it also has a little better sensor read out speed and similar cost it will be a real winner.

Let's see how all this plays out. The rumored camera would, for the first time, give Canon an edge over Sony in virtually all specs in this camera class (R5II v A7R5).

All I need is a firmware update for my R5 so it behaves more like Canon's recent models.

And lo and behold, there is a new FW version available, v 1.8. There is not much documentation on it; looks like only small fixes.

Edit: v 1.7, not 1.8.

First I've heard about R5 FW 1.8. Thanks for letting us know.

I had been hoping for the major firmware update too.......

EDIT @Archibald - I don't see this online. Do you have a link handy?

I’m wanting to jump into mirrorless and can’t decide if I should wait or just get the current R5. Don’t have to get one but would be fun.

My knee-jerk response to these leaked/rumored specs is relief that I'm not seeing an obvious need to upgrade from the current R5. It feels like they are trying to match up with Sony for megapixels and also aiming to add to their market share of videographers with via boosting video capabilities.

Coming from someone who uses their camera for about 90% photo / 10% video, this all looks rather "meh" to me. :-|

Canon EOS R5 Mark II Specifications (Rumored)

  • New 61MP CMOS BSI sensor
  • Dual DIGIC X processor
  • 30 FPS electronic shutter with tracking / 12 FPS mechanical shutter
  • Same 8-stop IBIS
  • New High Resolution mode similar to pixel shift shooting found on Sony/Fujifilm
  • 2x/4x/8x digital tele-convertor
  • Same Dual Pixel CMOS AF II from EOS R3 and EOS R6 Mark II
  • Internal 8K 60p video recording (8K RAW video spec to be confirmed)
  • Internal 4K 30p/60p/120p video recording (all by oversampling)
  • FHD 240p video recording
  • Focus breathing correction for video
  • New overheat prevention design similar to EOS R6 Mark II, at least 40min for 8K video, and over
  • 60 min for 4K video
  • Dual CFexpress type B card slot
  • Standard HDMI port
  • Dual USB-C port
  • 9.44M-dot EVF
  • New design of vari-angle LCD monitor optimized for video shooting
  • Launch time: 2023 Q2

I agree 100%. It's nice to be able to use the cheap and reliable SD cards. For important events, it's cheaper and best practice to use several smaller cards rather than putting all your eggs in one basket with a large card. If I'm not mistaken, the main reason for the initial move to the CF Express B cards was to provide sufficient write speeds to record 4k+ video. Again, with the addition of dual CF Express slots, I think Canon is targeting the videographer population as they may want the redundancy of simultaneously recording video to both cards.

I had a shitton of CF cards and was pissed enough to just be living happily with SDs. This is a no-go for me. Maybe they could make a camera just for photoguys some day again.

Would be nice if the price of the R5 came down then.

I'm selling mine to get less invested in Canon. Lenses have always sucked, RF lenses are only "good" with digital correction (but still soul-less)— I'll minimize my Canon reliance and go elsewhere.

I keep straying from the 5d4 only to keep coming back. I may buy a second.
