In my opinion you cannot go wrong with Fujifilm mirror less cameras. I was in a similar situation to you, just starting out and I went with the Fuji ecosystem of lenses and bodies. The results have been fantastic. Great prices for used gear and almost flawless performance. This is my unsolicited opinion :)

My experience was quite different. The lst trip to Botswana, two of us, myself included, brought along Fuji kits. In my case, XT1 it was as a small second body for closer work, the telephoto was on my 5D4. Dave had a Fuji as well. I

Both of us gave up on them after about 2 days. The battery capacity was seriously limiting, EVF not up to par, and AF could not keep up with our DSLRs. I am sure that Fuji has come along since the XT1, but I'd not consider it ideal.

CDS, Op stated that this is a hunting trip and silence is a must. That pretty much eliminates any SLR.

ok so lets go up in price a bit but keep to the superzooms with an articulated display.
What might you recommend with all the previously stated requirements and adding the articulated display?
Thanks

Nikon P1000, the king of super-zoom. 3000mm zoom. It's just insane. Nest is the Nikon P950. Older model and only a mere 2000mm zoom.

Given those parameters, ewspecially the ones I highlighted, I would recommend a compact super-zoom like the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS. Decent wide angle, great telephoto, just a tad over your budget but not by much. Or a Lumix DC-FZ80 which ticks off all your boxes and is less expensive. Toss in 4 or 5 batteries, and a couple SD cards and your set. Or for something a little smaller, a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX99. Any of these will do just fine.

How large of a card can these take and how long can they record video on a single card and battery?

Both questions are dependent upon the specific camera model under consideration, as both parameters can change with the camera firmware's implementation.

  • Likely that cameras of today do not have the same memory addressing limitations of 32-bit implementations vs. newer 64-bit limitations that determine memory card addressing,
  • but entirely independent is the question 'how big of a movie file' can be stored. And that is likely to be related to the resolution of the movie file...4K different from 1k movie file.

IOW, read the camera specs for the specific camera of interest.

Well been doing a bunch of reading and video watching and I think I may be going with a lightly used nikon p950. Looking for thoughts on this idea.
Thanks

I've only played with one in a store and didn't have a mem-card with me, but the zoom is out of this world. Typical Nikon menus, it bothers some folk but I have never had a problem with them. From what I could tell, outstanding camera.

There are usually only two or three issues with the good super zooms:

- IQ at the long end might be a bit lackluster especially away from the center of the image

- usually it will be a bit light hungry because the aperture is small and so is the sensor

- not a fault of the camera but at really long focal lengths, you will likely be impacted by atmospheric distortion, the linger the focal length the more the impact on IQ

It's not the focal length but the distance the subject is from you. At 2000mm with the subject being 100~200 feet from you distortion will be minimal. Increase the distance to a mile at the same 2000mm focal length, then you have a whole lot of atmosphere to go through. :) Of course, at 2000mm at 100 feet, your taking a picture of a caterpillar munching a daisy and filling the screen with the caterpillar only. :):)

Will it produce images that look good when printed at 8x10?

That depends on you. The camera is more than capable of doing so, and larger as well. But just like any long lens, the longer you go, the more visible poor shooting habits become and 2000mm is mighty long. If you want some samples and a really good review, check out the link below. Shows well what the camera is capable of. I would recommend getting it early and practice with it until you feel comfortable.
