About 3-4 meters. From a hide in my garden, 700mm and 45mp to crop from also helps. To give an idee, an adult blackbird is to big, have to zoom out to 420-500mm to get it beak to tail in the frame.

Male blackbird, uncropped, 420mm:

But I aim for this kind of feather detail around the eye(cropped to 1600 pixels from 8100):

Now to get this from a BIF....

Thanks for the explanation, there's no substitute for proximity when it comes to detail. Good luck with that BIFing! :)

I promised to post a shot of a too far away Great Spotted Woodpecker and here it is. Really too far away (and a big crop) but very happy I saw one again after I don't know how long.

Just call it bird in it's environment and it's fine :p

I also like seeing them but here they are to close... And I have to reposition my hide and feeders, the sun is now so low I'm shooting almost directly into it around midday and that's the only moment there's a bit of light at the moment.

Yeah, these are great. You can't get shots like these in the wild.
I just don't like hides! I like strolling and crawling and basically doing things the hard way. Hmmm, I wonder what that says about me.:mrgreen:

It also doesn't help that I don't have a garden... :-D

I like to do both, keeps the frustration at bay when in the wild they are to far away/not present/it's to wet/cold etc.

There is always post but black birds are always challenging to expose.

You're right about that! The either the bird is total black or the environment is to light. I find it difficult to select the exposure in post so there is enough detail in the bird but it doesn't look fake.
With spotmetering and centre focuspoint it's easier(used exp. comp.) but now with eye-focus I need spotmetering to follow focuspoint(which it doesn't).

Smient en stormmeeuw(eurasian widgeon and common gull):
All birds moved to the sea-side of the dyke, everything was frozen at the other side(last weekend).

Nice, catching the wigeon, Patrick. I saw a small group in the park when I was there last Sunday. Very odd, never seen them in the park before. There was one male and a couple of females. Nice catching the Common Gull as well. We get an occasional one over here.

Thanks, there are quit a few widgeons here, I guess there were between 100 and 200 floating just offshore in the westerschelde and resting on the dyke. Usually they are at the other side.

After my boattrip I started to try and determine the gulls, before I would just have said gull:lol:.

The lapwings also chose the seaside:

The Common Gull is easy. A medium large gull with dark eyes. Others not so much though, especially all the different juvenile stages.

A while ago Ken (kd-reno) recommended a gull book. I bought it and it’s fantastic. Everything you always wanted to know about gulls and how to ID them.

In Dutch: Meeuwen, by Peter Adriaens et al., 2021.

Just a thought… :-D
