Using this camera for hockey today was just an insanely perfect experience (paired with the EF 70-200 2.8 III).
It just doesn't miss.

I've been reading the manual but haven't found this. Is there a way to set a button so that pressing it turns off/on the subject detect feature? So I can quickly go from just using my AF point, to turning it on to track and eye/person/animal ? Without resorting to a back button focus setup (I used back button focus for a few years and never liked it).

I currently have my record button set to toggle servo/one shot AF for photos and it's awesome. So one more customization like this would be great. It's cool that the camera can auto find people or things but sometimes I just don't want that and don't like that it will override my AF point.

I believe that you can add or remove the subject tracking from the Q button screen. You can also enable or disable any of the subject tracking modes individually to limit the tracking choices that you have to select from. You can also program that same thing to the video record button in still photography mode. The latter approach gives up the ability to just take a short quick video record without switching to video mode.

I have my M-Fn button set to "Direct select of sub to detect". Now with this button I can easily select between Auto, People, Animals, Vehicles or None to detect.

Selecting none also eliminates the dancing square that is present on my single point focus button that we had discussed a couple of weeks ago in this thread starting here: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=19456730

Ok thanks for the info. :-)
I guess we need to use back button focus to achieve this then (which I have never liked). The nice thing is as Rick_G mentioned is that it's fairly easy to turn on/off subject detection with the Q button and should work well for most situations.

I've had the R6 Mark II for a month now and the experience is just so bloody amazing (along with the lenses I have) I'd give it a 9.5/10.

After 15+ years of shooting including Canon's best 1D cameras at the time. I'd say the next best experience of the 1DIII (that I used for 12 years professionally) and 5D IV would rate 6/10. The 1D III has that amazing build and battery but the IQ was "meh" to me. The 5D IV had the best IQ I'd experienced to that point, and 30 MP is perfect, but the AF was very "meh". The R6 Mark II exceeds both in performance and image quality by a fair bit. The only things that keep it from getting a perfect 10/10 are the body (it's fantastic but not 1D quality obviously), the battery (it's also fantastic, probably the best of any mirrorless but still my 1D could get 10,000 shots over 12 hours of shooting LOL, even on a 10 year old original battery), and the drop in MP from the 5D IV though that's more marketing than anything in real life (since upscaled my R6 Mark II images are actually much sharper than anything I could get with the 5D IV, partly because of the sensor/AA filter (I think) and partly because the R6 Mark II nails AF 99% of the time vs 50% with the 5D and that ultimately makes a bigger difference than advertised MP).

The 1D III was a trusty workhorse that got me gigs but I never was inspired to use it outside of work.
The 5D IV was inspiring to use bc of image quality, but I never really trusted it for work (or I would have to do triple shots of everything).
The R6 II is both inspiring and trustworthy... and I got it cheaper brand new the first week it was launched for less than I paid for the 5D IV when it was new.

I don't think you would need to use BBF to use the M-Fn button to select what if anything is tracked. It would be the same as going to the Q screen or the menu to select what is tracked but much easier to use and available without taking your eye away from the viewfinder.

The M-Fn button is the small button next to the shutter release.

My biggest concern is, in sports as 'crowded' as basketball, hockey, football, how to ensure the auto-detect pics up on the person I want. I'm sure, in the end, it's very similar to how I try to put the focus point on a player with my 5D3. It's just going to be different enough to require a little learning / retraining.

Coming from a 5D IV and 1D III, the R6 II feels like a huuuuuge advancement. For AF the 5D IV was very mediocre at best (the 1D III was better) and the R6 II is just miles ahead of both.
I would just use the area AF zones, then move them around to the person you want and that will tell the camera which person/face/eye to detect. It's just so fast and easy now it feels like cheating.
What lenses will you be using?
Btw, I use the EF 70-200 2.8 III and the combo is just unreal for speed and accuracy (many reviews I've seen say it's neck and neck with the RF version but the EF has a much nicer to use zoom ring position and zoom throw and costs $1300 less here in Canada)

I have version II of that lens and have used it with the R6II and it works well!!
