I'll be re-evaluating that when I get out there and have the time to experiment in decent weather. Are you using the AF Preview (white pre-focus square) option on page 3 of the purple AF menus? I find it very handy, if it can find the eye first.

Initial video reviews and experiments suggest to have that off.

Once you focus with tracking the focus boxes stay in the VF even if AF ON is not active. So you can still toggle from subject to subject.

As you say it is early days, I have only had four actual outings with the set up.

I had than on using my R5 since day one. It was via page 5 of the AF menus (top item) but Canon scrapped that menu with the R7 and a few newer bodies, renamed it and moved it to page 3. It does not help with getting your desired subjects eye if there are more than one in the scene. I like that will find and eye but just the camera waking up and if you do stop AF for any reason it will continue to track and AF.

I don't really have much to offer yet but I did get out. Had a little break in the weather. Lower to the ground there were ice crystals in the air and the beast was pretty far so this did not turn out that great. The trees have bene covered in hoar frost for 4 days now.

This was also at great distance but I was shooting high up so less haze. Detail is pretty good is that is encouraging.

The day before the sun was setting so I only got about 20 shots before the deer wandered off into the shade. The AF was on the right eye but I didn't consider any shot particularly sharp. I had to do a lot of PP and it still meh. However that was my first day out so I'll work that out. I need some perched birds. I might try today if the sun holds out. They were close and I also have to adjust to the DOF at 800mm.

How close were you? The right eye and ear look pretty good to me, so DOF could be an issue.

About 15 to 20 feet. I know the nose, etc is because of DOF.

If you were using the 100-500at 50mm, the DOF was well under an inch.

The ratio [FL:Sensorsize] is the same as the ratio [Distance:Subjectsize]. The former is 500/22 = around 23. How wide was the subject frame? A foot and a half? Then Distance = 1.5 * 23 = 34 ft.

Using an online DOF calculator, at 34 ft and f/8, DOF is about 5 inches.

I know. I was a tad shallow. Like I said only 15 shots or so of wildlife. I took all types of shots of signs, car license plate, etc at all types of distances. All good. Even with with a really shallow DOF nothing was really in focus. I ran it through Topaz to give it a little clarity. I'm not concerned. It will be there.
