Interesting water channel
Such were used extensively here in 1800's. We called them "water races", and could be carved through rock, dug in the ground, even made of wood.
Traditionally for mining and would snake around the country for many miles
I assume these are similar.

Many early mines relied on water carried great distances by water races cut out by hand often for many miles
This one about 5.75 miles long was cut from Weaning Paddock Ck to Moina for the Shepherd & Murphy mine
It has produced bismuth, iron ore, molybdenum, tin and tungsten, from the 1890s to 1950s
This is one part still showing in the bush

This seems to be what's called a flume here. My father did placer mining at one time in California. A flume was part of the local landscape.

Your father would have some interesting stories I imagine.
Flumes here were to my thinking different to that in my photo
Flume - the more artificial portion of a race or tail-race, consisting of piping, hose, or wooden boxes let into each other. Usually applied to wooden troughs for conveying water.

Water races such as in my photo were contained within a Water Race Reserve where they crossed private land.

I am posting a few pics from 1960 to compare with those of 2017-2022. There is 60 years between the Black/White images and the colour images. Had I realised that I would be using these pictures 60 years later I would have taken more pics with greater detail - but 60 years hence seemed such a long time - I should have known better.

It looks like the end of the canal (or what's left of it) is nigh! After about 200 years property developers seem to have finally got their little claws into the surrounding area. Nothing is ever certain though.

The Canal Basin was originally at the western end of the Thames and Medway Canal built in the early 1800s and opened on 14 October 1824. Its lock gates gave entry to the River Thames. The Canal was seven miles long, saving a coastal journey of 46 miles. However, owing to tolls charged and tidal difficulties, it soon became something of a white elephant and was taken over by the South Eastern Railway in 1845. Part of the Canal was later filled in leaving the Basin isolated and now used as a mooring for pleasure craft.

My first two pics are the entrance/exit portals. The pedestrian entrance/exit and the boat entrance/exit.

Well so does Ray
