Nice capture of the Rough-winged Swallow. Capturing any Swallow is a feat! I've been seeing Barn Swallows here, kind of early for them too, but I guess some of both species winter over.

I have a moderate success rate with head-on shots on the R7.

I just have the tracking on the auto, are you using one of the other settings?

Thanks Lester, appreciate the your comment on the Sanderling head-on shot.

I used Servo, Whole Area, Subject tracking, Animals, Eye Detect, Switching Tracked Subjects=1, Case A (interesting, I thought I had it set on Case 2), Electronic Shutter., H Continuous.

In this instance, the backgound was fairly clear, and the little guy though coming fast was quite a way off initially. I had time to made sure focus was locked with shutter half-press before fully pressing the shutter to start the burst. 3 of 5 shots in the burst were in focus. I tried a second burst as he got closer, but I must have lost focus lock because they were all garbage!

If I had a $ for every shot that failed, I'd be a millionaire by now as these action shots tend to be hit and miss (mostly miss!) as the birds are so close (5-6 metres), highly animated and the action happens so fast they are hard to frame and follow.

I have so many shots of them OOF, exiting the frame or being photo bombed by another OOF bird entering the frame...

These are both great shots, these guys can be tricky to expose and get good detail in flight. You nailed them. Very nice.

Dennis, I think most of us here, experience exactly what you are describing. But the frustrations of bird photography are what make us want to go out the next day and give it another try.

I read your reply to Lester. No one here wants to show their garbage. But we all get plenty of it (I think). Thank goodness for our good shots. For without them, we'd all give this game up.
