A couple of doorways from the abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop in Namibia. The story goes that while the men were in the mines all day, the women were bored. the cement buildings were the same boring color as the sand outside and there was little to do so they painted the walls colorfully to brighten up their days. The mine quality dropped so the town was then abandoned to be taken over by the sands of the desert.

Interesting pics and story, Buddy. You prompted me to look the place up on Google Maps. Fascinating.

Time of day is key if you ever visit. Also you need a special permit to access the area. I can't recall the price but cost wasn't too high.

Had a chance to return to Superior Arizona and peek inside the La Mina Lounge.

It was a prosperous mining site for diamonds, until discovery of an easier site to find diamonds
about 270 km south. Maybe the story of painting walls is true, but it was overcome
by a simple economic change.

Actually, a new National Park area is opening south of Kolmanskop and supposedly will include some of the mining towns further south. I heard that latter in 2020 and need to follow up on where that stands.

I think Kolmanskop may be the ultimate example of abandoned ruins in this part of the world. When we visited (a long time ago) there was a piano still standing in the dance hall, partly covered by sand blown through a broken window.
There were no tradisional "mine", the diamonds were on the surface in the sand of the dunes. Even today there are parts of Namibia where you may not go without a permit, because you may be tempted to dig in the sand for diamonds

Advice, C&C welcome

That's a great picture, but IMO it's neither abandoned nor dilapidated. It's well mantained and you can go inside and climb to the top.

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?
