Those are spectacular, Harry!!! Mortgage your house to buy that lens! :p

Lol
I don’t bird enough to justify that big hole in the bank. It’s very tempting and I absolutely love this set up. But golly… my wife would go into a fit!

I titled this one, "A Little Snowy ... A Little Blue."

1. Some warm light to warm the soul during these winter months. A little snowy egret catching the first rays coming over some brush and onto its head.

Taken at Ft. De Soto.

ISO 500, f/5.6, 1/2000 sec, @226 mm. 7:56 am. 10-22-2022

2. A little blue heron that I captured on someone's boat dock in the neighborhood.

Good question. I don't know. I have seen some of these birds in a state reserve in Central Florida a few years ago where a few were unbanded. They were probaly young ones. Haven't been back to that location yet though.

BTW Ed, this is a cell phone pic of the scrub habitat where the above photographed birds live in Martin County in a state park. I live near this park now so visit the birds regularly. They (the State) do controlled burns here too which explains the dead trees. This is a large multi-use state park with a lot of habitat, a campground, and trail bike trails all over as well as hiking-only trails. Very popular. Local train tracks also run right through it. Lots of bird species including wading birds (several ponds), woodpeckers, scrub jays, raptors, etc.

Hope this doesn't break any thread rules.

It is sad that habitat is disappearing so fast for so many species. I have to wonder why so many bands, though, and whether it reflects the need for biologists to have projects more than a need to protect the birds.

There are certainly many projects, but they are all aimed at protecting the species. Understanding things like family structure, breeding behavior and individual movement are all important in developing protection plans. Because of the small population most studies are designed to monitor the activity individual birds.

These are very interesting birds. They are the only species that lives entirely within the state of Florida, and they are completely isolated from any other Scrub-Jay species (Central Texas is the closest). They spend their lives near their birthplace, and family members frequently help nesting pairs raise young.

The controlled burns are necessary to maintain suitable habitat. Fire is a natural part of the ecology of this plant community, and without it these area would become overgrown and the oaks would be replaced by other species.

So I'm always happy to see Florida Scrub-Jay pics.
