I recently witnessed this fight between two Kestrels, their claws locked together until they hit the ground. I'm not sure if either bird was injured but they flew off in opposite directions. I'd have liked to have been closer to the action but this image is a 100% crop from 700mm taken from the opposite side of a lake:
