generally stays in Lake Michigan (and Lake Superior) running iron ore pellets (taconite) between Duluth Minnesota and Burns Harbor Indiana.

she was headed down to Toledo Ohio for winter lay-up and caught her coming out of Lake Huron into St. Clair River

crappy weather prompted the bw conversion

Towboats on the Mississippi River have to go through a railroad swing bridge at Sabula, Iowa. Apparently, they've had a few collisions with the bridge, one of which knocked the operator's shack off the bridge. Fortunately, he survived, but the Corps of Engneers decreed that towboats with barges would have to be assisted by a tug. There's now a tug on call at the harbor, and that's what you see up frong in this picture.

Thanks for the info, Barbarian - I knew there was a hidden story and you have explained it well. I will now look for some more info on the Mississippi.
