First outing with the R3 + Canon EF400 f2.8 for football. Purely a test for myself and the gear to see how it performed with my usual sport.
It does take a bit of getting used to after shooting regularly with a zoom lens, and you do miss a lot of shots you would normally pick off, but the quality of shooting at f2.8 does make a difference.
Shot the first half with a monopod and the second hand held, which is my usual modus operandi for football.

Was also testing a phone app to try and nail down the white balance under the floodlights. Reasonably happy with how it performed as there were different readings across the pitch and I just had to go with the mid point and make a setting which worked the best.
I ended up between 4000k and 4300k which I felt wasn't bad. The weather conditions were cool but calm and there was a slight mist in the air which can often distort the lighting.

First outing for me with my R3, a lovely Barn Owl a little after sunset..

I do have a question for the more experienced users please, I found the R3 to really struggle to actually acquire focus on the subject ie barn owl but once it was locked on, Wow, it was fantastic.

Three points in response, firstly you've used your 600mm with the 2xTC to get get your shot (nice image btw!) the AF will always be a little slower with a TC, especially the 2x, I find exactly the same when using my R3 with my EF 500mm f4, I haven't tried the RF super tele's but I've read they are the same. Secondly, if you have time when you see a bird in flight crossing your path, get focus on the ground or a tree etc at about the same distance and quickly start tracking the bird before locking AF on it and firing a burst. That works for me so I'd suggest it's worth a try. Thirdly, ensure the focus limit switch on your 600mm isn't set to full when shooting BiF unless they're very close, set it on 10m to infinity (or whatever the 600mm setting is, I'm going of the 500mm setting there) that will save the lens searching the closer distances and will make AF acquisition faster.
