Is there a wireless receiver so I can continue using my 580EX Speedlite

I need to use my Speedlite off-camera. The tutorials and and advice on YouTube shows photographers using the recent generation of wireless Speedlites and strobes.

* Is there a transmitter/receiver package that I can use for my 5D mkIII and Canon 580EX? I'd like to be able to trigger the camera from the strobe/receiver as well.

I can upgrade to the Godox wireless speedlite if it's necessary, but my 580EX was expensive and it still works.

Thanks!
Gibson

Neewer makes a bunch of receivers and transmitters, as does godox.

Would something like this fit your needs?

The Godox line works well. See https://www.bhphotovideo.com …lash_transmitter_for.html (external link).

Note you then need a receiver for the 580EX and that runs about $40. The combination gives you about 300 feet range in the best of conditions.

The whole kit is about $140 on Amazon, see https://www.amazon.com …-Smartphone/dp/B07W1JG2GC (external link)

On eBay, the kit with two receivers is $115, https://www.ebay.com/itm/195561172812 (external link)

I have a friend who has the Godox and is quite happy with the setup. I have several Yongnuo triggers and quite happy with those. It seems like either of those (or even other options) give you some choices.

If you're interested in the Yongnou option, I have the "dumb" triggers (RF-603) which are good for manual flash. They do not support TTL/E-TTL. But not everyone is interested in manual flash. The 603's are also good as a low-latency shutter release.

I also have several of the YN622C triggers, including the "controller" unit (YN622C-TX). I really like using the controller to adjust the remote triggers remotely (without needing to go to the trigger). This is especially nice when a trigger (and the attached flash) is tucked away in a hard-to-reach location. The 622s can also be used as a shutter release trigger, but there is a delay with the 622s that is not the case with the 603s.

Particulars will be affected by the actual scenario that you want to use. In any case, I definitely recommend the 622 series. I also believe that there are great options with Godox and others, just haven't used them.

I've used these with my 5D3 and 3 x 580EX flashes and it works perfectly. I've also used these triggers with my other bodies and other flashes with perfect interoperability.

Thanks all! I'm going to pick up the Godox set with 2 receivers.

Cheers!

To answer your original question, though, your options for controlling your 580 off-camera are the various optical masters from the optical era: The ST-E2 or any of the optical master flashes including the tiny EX90. $50 would get you either of those that I mentioned; you would control the EX90 and the remote 580 through the camera menu.

Not sure about controlling the camera with them, though.

RF receivers and transmitters are superior to the optical triggers.

Yes, but that wasn't the question.

I guess we see different questions then. Glad the op was able to find the answer with the godox devices.

You can try the Yongnuo YN-622C-TX transmitter/YN-622C transceiver and Godox Xpro-C transmitter and X1R-C receiver, but neither combo is likely to give you full manual control over a 580EX. They're designed to work more with 580EX II-era and later gear. The 580EX's wireless communication capabilities (which is what these reverse engineered pieces of gear are faking) don't allow for power control other than TTL group ratios, really (sigh).

It wasn't until the Digic IV processor came in on the cameras and the 580EX II/430EX II were released that you got A-C group control in either all-M or all-TTL. The 580EX II is completely compatible with those triggers.

I can upgrade to the Godox wireless speedlite if it's necessary, but my 580EX was expensive and it still works.

I know the feeling. But back in the YN-622 days, I had to swap my 580EX for a 580EX II just to get my YN622 gear to work. Just me, but it's probably worth it to blow $130 on a TT685 II-C to take the place of your 580EX as an off-camera unit and keep the 580EX for on-camera use (still has better TTL accuracy/consistency, overheat protection, easier head rotation, etc.)

The TT685 II-C will also be a lot nicer/more convenient for off-camera use since you won't have to ever remember to pack a receiver and batteries for the receiver. :D Having the transceiver built-in makes for faster/simpler/more robust setup and breakdown as well. The convenience of having that cannot be overstated. And every time you think a TT685 II-C is too expensive, just remember how much a 600EX II-RT costs. :D
