Well, not really. The early sunrise was at my back, lighting the trees behind it. Since it was wet, the film of water was reflecting the blue sky above. There aren’t many gators much North of here, and their numbers are pretty sparse along the creek by my cabin. The night before this shot, my oldest grand-nephew was down and had seen pics of the youngest holding a bullfrog that went from eye level on ou of the pic at waist level. As it was getting dark, T (age 10)said, “uncle Keith, I want to catch a bullfrog. Well I put him in the front of the canoe with a big spotlight. His little sister was in the middle, and both had better lights than I in the back of the canoe. As we shoved away from the dock, I was instructing T how to search the shoreline with the big spot. At that moment, I spotted eyes reflecting back from my weak headlight. So as I slowly paddled toward what I thought was a frog, I was telling T to keep the keep the light right in the frogs eyes, and I’ll bring him right alongside, so all he needs to do is reach out and pick it up. Well I did my part, but T wasn’t reaching out. I guess he was speechless too. Eventually the gator slowly submerged as they normally do. As I watched it sink, it suddenly dawned on me what it was, and I said gang that was a gator. Then from the front of the canoe in near dog-whistle pitch came, “It was an alligator”. Ha Priceless

Feb 01, 2023 14:54 | #815 Here is one of my favorite pics of a Red-eared Slider Turtle sitting on a log on the edge of a small pond. The turtle has a pretty large leach, with a small one right beside it. Image hosted by forum (1195349) © Keith Newton [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. The turtle has a pretty large leach, with a small one right beside it. Besides that, right over behind it a Green darner dragonfly pupa is climbing up on the log too. Also those little white hairs on the log have a Water-scorpion egg at their base. I suppose those hairs probably have some toxins that protect them from predators, but that is speculation on my part. Is the turtle fairly large? That would be quite the large leech. Nice capture! If YOU like the photo, that's all that matters!

Thanks for asking. I think it was only about 5-6” long, so the leach was maybe 2 - 2.5” long.

Feb 02, 2023 11:38 | #818 Here are a couple of green Anole lizards. The first is one of many that I have found on my predawn walks. They are mostly arboreal, and I have to wonder if sleeping out on a leaf like this is how they get water besides what they get in their food. You can’t tell, but the Sweetgum leaf was tilted down, and I’m shooting almost straight up to make the best of that big drop on the end of the leaf. This second one was in a begonia basket on my sister’s front porch. I caught it licking dew from the leaves. Image hosted by forum (1195444) © Keith Newton [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Feb 09, 2023 08:07 | #824 Here is a pic of my late best friend with one of the many turtles she found for me. Whenever we were down at the cabin “Frogwarts”, on the shore of a slow moving creek, she was free to run around and explore. Besides tennis balls, turtles was her speciality. Image hosted by forum (1196257) © I Keith Newton [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff. I know the next shot is an amphibian rather than a reptile, but it reminds me of Sass. We were packed and headed for home one Monday morning. I stopped the truck at the end of the driveway to leave the trash in the can out by the road. Well, I heard this frog singing just out in the woods, so grabbed my camera and took this shot of a Green Treefrog, on a Sassafras sappling by the way. When I got back in the truck, I found the foil that had been wrapped around a nice big chunk of grilled salmon that I was planning to have for lunch, which I always enjoyed sharing with her. When I saw that she had hogged it all, I scolded her in a very hurtful way! While she knew she had done wrong, she didn’t seem too remorseful and I only had myself to blame for leaving her with easy access for too long. So while I like this shot, it’s kind of bitter sweet, and dang , I miss her companionship. Image hosted by forum (1196258) © I Keith Newton [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW.
