The R7 has to be able to recognize the subject to focus on it. So if it is just a blur, it won't AF. It's not clear if this is your situation, though.

That is were the pre focus technique developed by users is invaluable. I can't imagine using my ML bodies without it.

Might be a lens fault, or one of the myriad settings gone awry, as I’ve had no issue with my RF100-400 on R7, in fact I’m quite impressed with the images from such a cheap zoom.

I could not believe the IQ from the EF-S 18-55 and 55-250 STM's. I took those for light travel if I didn't want to worry about gear. If I had dropped one in a river I would just buy another and not think about it. Sometimes those inexpensive lenses are pretty amazing.

Yeah, I can't believe no one's snatched mine up yet from the For Sale Forum. Punches WAY above its weight- only sold it because I unloaded my M6II.
I'm unsure if Canon can top that combo with their RF 50/100 and ?? lens…

Can you post a quick link to this technique (post # or external URL)? Much obliged....

At the moment, I have configured the AF-ON button to do eye-AF and the * button to do standard AF (spot, single, zone, etc.). If the image is blurry, I hit the * button to get it into focus (I have set the lens AF motor to keep driving even if focus isn't immediately achieved) and then switch to the AF-ON button to initiate eye-AF. I found the YouTube videos by the wildlife photographer named Wild Alaska to be very useful.

Tonight's Moon.
R7 with RF 800mm f/11 STM, handheld.

There's a little bit of blue fringing along the right edge in all of my shots tonight but I'm not sure if that's the camera/lens or Lightroom. I don't see it in the in-camera JPEGs but they're lower resolution.

Purchased the camera a couple of days ago through the Amazon 10% off sale. I figured that I probably wouldn't do too much better in the refurb store, so why wait. Spent some time setting up the camera after watching a bunch of YouTube videos, especially the ones by a photographer whose channel is called Wild Alaska.

Anyhow, here are some backyard birding photos after the first couple of hours with the camera. All are with the 500 mm F4 II lens.

This guy has been visiting my backyard sporadically and feeding from the suet and tube feeders. The acorn business must be slow at the moment!

Here is another relatively rare visitor to my backyard, although they are much more common elsewhere. This Townsend's warbler has been hanging around my backyard for the last few weeks.

Always love photographing these guys. There are a thousand variations of color, and lately, I have had both a slate-colored and Cassiar subspecies in my backyard.

Here is an example with an R3 but it is the same thing. The Fro likes to use expansion AF. Minutes 2:30 to 6:00. 3:10 has the best example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGrEWOZYgDw (external link)

Here is the R6II. Same AF system. Starts at minute 18:44. At 19:55 is longer example.

Picked up a Sigma 60-600mm. If you can get past the weight, it is a nice lens.
