I’m similar. I’ve been trying to get back in tune with 50mm as well! Since I got the 35GM that’s pretty much all I use around the house and for any sort of gathering. But I had the Canon 501.2 EF in 2019 and whilst the AF drove me nuts, it certainly felt like it had a hint of magic, and therefore that’s all I used!! Also loved the size and feel of that lens. So I’d like to get back into it. Daft thing is I have the 551.8 and whilst I can’t really fault it for my needs, I don’t have any love for it. I’m excited by a 501.4 GM. I’ve been pondering the 1.2 as well. Slowly convincing myself the size penalty of the 1.2 isn’t worth it over the 1.4 - obv very subjective! I’ve looked at too many Flickr images recently on the subject. Any views on the 1.4 vs 1.2 thing?

That is pretty interesting. I keep thinking about the 1.2, not cos I have a need for it, just because I really want to try it out. A 1.4 sized like the 35 1.4 would be nice though. I wonder how different the two prices are likely to be with 1.2 vs 1.4

I shot many years with mainly 50mm in my pre-Sony days!

With this Village thing I'm doing I do sometimes find 35mm a bit wide & wonder if 50mm would be better!! But I do think 35mm is more versatile for landscape/sunrise/set stuff for sure. Maybe a R series body with 35GM to allow some extra cropping would be the answer......

I love the 55 1.8 but I always feel the need for 1.4. When I use the 1.2, I step it down to get more in focus. I'd just use 1.2 for the shots where I want to be more artistic.

I'll see if I can snap some shots for samples over the weekend.

Yeah, that's the conclusion I'm coming to, that 1.8 -> 1.4 is a bigger difference than 1.4 to 1.2. Would be interesting to see comparisons if you have time.

I'm really just thinking of 50mm to get some more subject focussed pics of the family when out for walks etc. Coincidental timing, but Tony Northrup (love him or hate him!) just realised an interesting video on the whole 50mm perspective (comparing it to 35 and 24mm). I like his versions of the different perspectives.

I think I’m going to sell my a7Riii if that was of interest Lee. Going to sell that and my a9ii I think and upgrade to the a7rV and run with one Sony body. Still pondering though.

Some snow at the Grand Canyon. Most of the park was shut down due to the icy conditions...... I realized I have never shot in snow before!!!!

Lately I've been shooting mostly 28mm and 50mm. But when I'm going out without a specific plan, I grab the 35mm and leave the others at home.

35/40mm is certainly my go-to. But...... if I have the film camera with me I always pop in the adapter which could give me 28mm and 50mm of I could be bothered swapping anyway

I have 28/2.8, 50/1.9 and 135/2.8 for that.

Finally got the pointed end of the fence out of my backside...ordered the new Sony Xperia phone...my current is having issues and I am being sucked in by the tech and images...

Not on much these days but do follow several of you folks on Flickr. My wife and I moved two hours closer to the Texas Gulf coast back in August and are currently building a new house. We have been in our small RV since then but do have a metal building with appliances set up for use. I am closer to many photography opportunities here. We have put a bit of work into the place and are downsizing hopefully for the last time but this one will have no mortgage. We went to pick exterior paint yesterday and on the way back home came across a bald eagle pair along a back road. I had taken the A9 with a Tamron 150-500 on it with me.

Good luck with the build Bill, looks like its coming along nicely. I built mine several years back, and more recently restored a log cabin..
