To truly understand this try reading up on the British Canal system , but in short, Narrowboats were formerly small cargo carriers towed along a path next to a canal by Horse from the early days of Canal Navigation. in the industrial age, small engines powered these boats and as the need for moving freight on canals was superceded by Train and Lorry these boats, and the one depicted in my photograph was a small one by comparison, found a new use by covering the cargo hold and making them into Houseboats. Today, it is a leisure industry whereby you can tour the British Canal network north to south, East to west at a gentle speed and really take in the great countryside and countless cities and principal towns, Hope that answers your question and thanks for the interest :)

As you quote “A photograph is nothing without a story” Very true, it is nice to see a few descriptive comments, or maybe a reminiscence or an interesting link - and of course a location.:-)

Thanks :) For me, adding a descriptive comment makes up for my lack of photographic expertise!

I could do with a lack of photographic expertise like you 42

I've lost count how many times I have asked for some info on photos. It gives them so much more me-thinks.

I for one had never heard of them Nic, so ta for finding and posting that Nic. Short, but quite an eye opener.

I have had a holiday on a narrow boat and what ever else it wasn't an easy time. Enjoyable but not easy. I have also crewed on a 30m peniche (barge) called the Lodela, owned by a good friend of ours, when we lived it France. That was really an experience and I had several short and a couple of longer trips on her. Once again, not easy even when the locks were operated by the eclusiers (lock keepers)

Wow, they left almost no room to stand and operate the boat. You can tell from the vent stacks the interior has some form of heat.

There's a lot of folk live on them all year round and they are quite comfortable. The larger ones are up to 72 feet long and they normally have an open deck on the bow.

The fire will be a log or coal burner and a lot are centrally heated these days

Here's a load of photos of them https://duckduckgo.com …=osx&iax=images&ia=images (external link)

And a bit of history from good old Wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narrowboat (external link)
