This leucistic junco has been hanging around behind my house. I managed to get some shots when he ventured close. Very interesting pigmentation that seems to be largely around the head - makes him stand out, but he seems to be thriving.

Great stuff.

I've been getting some quality time recently with the R7 and it is delivering way more keepers than my previous DSLR gear. However, I am noticing something peculiar. If the bird is at a bit of a distance with a high contrast background, then good AF on the head is very difficult. Example below (cropped about 1/3 of the width). With eye AF on, the camera is able to find the eye (most of the time). But when it does so, it actually focuses on the background.

This cormorant was sitting patiently while I tried different settings, eye AF on as well as off, pumping the AF-On button, etc. In all the shots, the eye was OOF.

In this shot, when playing it back on the LCD, the red AF box is right over the eye.

I don't recall the details of what was happening when shooting. I was just focused on getting focus!. There have been lots of similar situations. Sometimes I am able to get a sharp eye in some of the shots, along with OOF eyes in others. So sometimes it works but it is not dependable.

I mentioned this effect a few posts ago. If something is in focus with tracking on, in a plane close to the intended target, then it gets stuck on the background (or foreground).

Switching to fine spot AF (tracking off) should pull you in, then you may return to tracking.

The problem I had was spotting this was happening live at the time through the VF.

Hi Lester and Archie et al. - I am a bit confused about fast shooting mode using Electronic shutter. When I capture the eye and the focus locks onto it with a half press of the shutter button and I fully press the button - Do you know if the camera has time to maintain focus between the individual shots - I.e. If for instance I rattle off 50 shots at high speed will the camera have time to refocus between shots? Or maybe I should use a lower shutter repetition rate? I haven't formed a definite opinion. Just to say I do not use BBF. I hope I have made this fairly clear.

My expectation is yes it should, else the camera would not keep up during in-flight shots.

This seems to work ok for up to 15 FPS ES and EFCS, possibly also MS but I found VF issues with that.

30 fps (ES obvs) I don't have experience of other than one not very sucessfull burst mode test.

Of course this all depends on the change of range etc of the target etc.
