Switch from 1DxMk3 to R5

I did try and search to see if this has been asked before, but found nothing obvious.

Mostly due to a general change in what I photograph these days and generally getting older, I am thinking of trading in my 1Dx3 for an R5.

The main reason for not trading in the 1Dx is simply it is worth almost nothing and there is still some value in the mk3.

My 24-105 is also getting past its best and really needs replacing so the logical step is to get the R5 and the RF 24-105.

I'm hoping to loan this combo for a studio shoot I'm doing in a couple of weeks as I really want to try it properly before buying being as I have traditionally had a dislike for mirrorless - or at least electronic view finders - but they seem to have improved massively over the last few years.

Sounds like you answered your own question. Try the combo out to see what you think, but yes EVF on the higher priced models are quite good. The 1Dx3 is bound to drop pretty quickly in value as well so it makes sense to use it as collateral toward the R5, or toward the R3.

You are probably right - I have booked a R5, 24-105 and EF converter for hire over a weekend in a couple of weeks - which coincides with a studio shoot I'm booked on which will be a good test I think. Also gives me chance to give it a go outside with some long EF lenses on.

Be aware that the replacement for the 2020 EOS R5 may appear within the next 12-18 months.

Something to consider if you are into buying the latest and greatest

If it's an actual replacement for the 1DX Mark III you are looking for, then the R3 comes in closest. But your comment about general change may very well make the R5 your best choice.
I picked the R3 myself, since I was more interested in trying out mirrorless than the very incremental upgrade to the 1DX Mark III from my 1DX Mark II and 1DX.

But I never trade anything in. When a camera I carefully have selected back in some day no longer is of any interest to me, then it's not to anybody else either. Hence very small value, so better to keep at that point.

Yeah, I was aware that there will no doubt be a update to the R5 in the relative short term - that doesn't overly bother me, I plan to buy 2nd hand anyway as a "as new" samples are about £1k less than new which is a decent drop (And which a new one would drop to on walking out the door!) - I went G2, 350D, 5D, 1D3, 1DX and 1DX3 - The 1Dx is worth pittance so I'll keep that as it still works perfectly fine, even if I barely use it since the 1DX3 came along - and if the R5 does indeed do enough then I've no doubt that wouldn't change - I did actually trade in the 1D3 for the 1Dx3 - got nothing for it, but knew it would just sit on the shelf so something being better than nothing. So to PX the 1dx3 makes more sense to me.

But it all depends on a couple of weeks time and a decent test (I hope!)

I'm saving up money now for a R5 V2 and a 100-500 lens to go with it. I plan to use adapters for my other less used lenses. I mostly take photos of birds and other assorted wildlife and the 100-400 V2 is my most used lens.. on a IDX2.

I have no doubt you will enjoy it.

If ever I do buy one I'd be jumping from a 2015 EOS 5Ds R to a 2024 EOS R5 Mark II. If I could go back 2 decades ago to my 2003 EOS 10D I'd have upgraded every ~1 decade or so instead of every latest & greatest.

Largely due to utility.

The thread title is misleading, are you talking about 1D mark III, or a 1DX Mark III? They are two totally different cameras.

Title and body of message features the "x" in 1Dx3.

The only mention of the 1D3 was that I had one before the 1Dx, which I traded for the 1Dx3 - this is about trading the 1Dx3 for the R5

The existence of the R3 may make the calculus a little different, but I switched from 1DX3 to R5 the second the R5 was available.
The 1DX3 is an amazing camera, and I loved it for the brief time I had it.

But it left me really wanting more. More MP (as compared to my 5D4) and more of the amazing AF system that was available only in live view. As someone that shoots a lot of wildlife, I found not being to use the 1DX3's best AF system (available only in live view) through the viewfinder was brutal.

So when the R5 came out with potentially even better dual pixel AF, an EVF so I could use that AF system as i am familiar, through the viewfinder as opposed to rear screen, topped with the massive bump in resolution I jumped right on board, and I don't regret it one bit.

Depending on what you shoot, your needs and experience may of course differ. But for me, the R5 was a significant step up vs. the 1DX3.

Thanks CDS - In the UK we get the chance to hire gear from Canon (Well a 3rd party) for 48hrs for free (Not even freight) so as I mentioned above I booked one for this weekend. Which arrived Friday - except when I booked it I saw they did it as a kit with the 24-105 and EF adapter - so hit that one - not realising that despite being on the R5 page, was actually the RP kit............

So I went to our local store and tried the R5 their (And the R3) - must say the R3 is truly stunning - so light compared to the Mk3 - but having played with both, decided to keep the Mk3 and get the R5 - I was planning on a 2nd hand R5 - but the deal I got makes the cost difference not huge - especially as I'm PXing my first DSLR - 350D (Kiss in the USA I think) - I've not used it in probably 10years and is worth nothing - about £15 - but the deal is any working digital camera and they will add £200 to the value.

I used the RP in the studio anyway yesterday - did take a couple of shots with the Mk3 for comparison - I've not yet looked at them, but the RP did a pretty good job in a none demanding situation - but the AF is awesome even on that! There will be a couple of shots elsewhere on here shortly.

I will be picking up the R5 today.

One question, though - real world battery life - I have got it with a second battery - but the RP went flat very quickly and only just lasted the shoot - though I was bluetoothing/wifiing into the phone.

Well, the R5 is no where near the 1DX for battery life. No question about that. I don't recall what battery the RP uses, but if it's the same as the R5, it will not be any worse than the R5. (RP might use a little rebel battery though?)

R5 vs 5D Mk4 with same battery, still not as good, but closer.

To be honest though for most of my shoots I can still manage with one or two batteries in the R5. When I'm doing people work, I do use the R5 grips even though it is by far the worst designed grip of any I have used, I still prefer to work with it when I am shooting primarily in portrait orientation. With two batteries I have yet to need to swap during a shoot. Obviously, our needs may differ a lot.

Recently I've done more and more video work, for different reasons. That means the camera is active for much longer durations. The LP-E19 battery in the R3 is good then. The fact that this battery is a one-size-fits-all for the cameras I use with some frequency is another advantage.
