Catalytic converters theft isn’t that prevalent either, maybe in certain areas but not in my parts.

I think fuel theft and cat theft has more to do with a ready market that does not care about asking questions about sourcing.

Metals future went on a rollercoaster ride with COVID. So when metals goes down the cat will not be cut.

When diesel hit $5.71/gal here it was such a tempting item to steal but when it was $2.01/gal during 1st 6 months of COVID no one wanted it.

Again... min wage here is ~$1/hr with ~84.1% of adults making $5k/yr.

Park the truck by the side of the road. Siphon them out of the fuel tank then when a owner-operated jeepney (13 to 23-seat mini bus) passes by they sell it to them at a fraction of the pump.

Fare for jeepney is $0.36/mile for the 1st 2.5 miles. Then it goes up after.

Well fortunately large city areas aren’t the norm geographically, so at least in this part of the midwest, it’s isn’t prevalent.

Car thefts in general is higher than cat theft.

In any case EV will have a huge impact long term and change the proverbial landscape.

So after reading my post, just imagine the industrial landscape and how it is going to change?

Oil change facilities
Service centers
Auto parts aisles at stores
Car parts stores
Car dealers and their service centers
Car parts distribution
Fluid manufacturing
Mechanical car parts manufacturing
Needs for trained techs greatly diminished
Etc

The same thing to hit the camera market is gearing up to hit the transportation space.

Lots of jobs will be gone, flipping burgers will also be gone because the workers will be replaced by robots...

That will only occur if min wage is higher than the TCO of a robot.

But even then some business owners who are not that numbers driven and prefer to interact with people would tend to stick to people as much as possible until it comes to a point they cannot pay the bills & salaries on time.

Then they look at the options available to them.

It doesn't take much effort to prove part of this post wrong, either. I don't know about the prevalence of car theft, but I picked a bunch of small cities around the midwest and they all have cat convertors stolen. The problem is everywhere. And this problem will be solved by EVs.

Again not an issue in these here parts so i don’t know what to tell you. Car theft is more prevalent than people coming out to a hacked car. Also 15-18k stolen cats a year according to a year out to go stats just isn’t that big an issue. Maybe 2022 stats are higher but again it is just a tiny percentage of vehicles on the roads. Like about .009% of registered vehicles, so it’s not a huge issue in the US… there are about 40x more vehicles stolen annually.

I find it so fascinating that we went from talking about point & shoots to cats. lol

I am also grateful that none of POTN's members or mods have reported anyone of us for going off topic.

Now, that's what you call mature with a proper head.

Because point and shoots are boring, and never really was a highly discussed thing on the boards anyways. ;)

Since we don't know where "these here parts" is located in the midwest, it's difficult to make an independent judgement. The discussion is about catalytic converter theft, so stolen cars is a non-sequitur.
I also wonder where you get your numbers as State Farm alone has paid claims on more than 23,000 cat converters in the first half of 2022. That is far more than your value, for only half a year, and a only single insurance company.
https://newsroom.statefarm.com …atalytic-converter-theft/ (external link)
Over a year, this comes to 46,000 just for this single insurance company.

And there are nearly 1M vehicles stolen and there are over 290M registered vehicles. Yes the numbers are higher than 2021, but still vehicle theft is much higher. I am more worried one of our three vehicles are stolen than my cats being cut out. Perhaps one day we can discuss how much these stats have switched places but not right now.

Our state has less than 500 claims out of 43000 with State Farm in 2022 in the 12 month claims windows, and is showing signs of slowing.

Who cares how many cars were stolen? Electric cars will be stolen in the same proportion.
BTW, your numbers are wrong again, with only 800,000 stolen

We can go search the internet all day, I find one that says 939k you show 800k, yada. You are wrong, I am wrong… When cat theft numbers hit 1% of registered vehicles, then we can talk, right now we are at best .02%. For now 290,000,000 vehicles, let's say 875K (800K from one site, 939K from another, etc) stolen, and state farm reports 43000, lets go up to 60000 to keep you happy, and we have .3% stolen vehicles and .02% in catalytic theft. And California accounts for 1/4 of the State Farm numbers by the way.

You say who cares about vehicle thefts, and I say who cares about catalytic conv thefts? One is much more likely to occur than the other. I am 15x more worried about my 3 vehicles getting stolen. 2023 might change these numbers, but not the order.

I am done getting into an internet search contest on who can pull whatever stats from whatever source. I am correct without any needed stats, car thefts are magnitudes more than catalytic thefts and we don’t have that catalytic conv issue to worry about currently in this state, for now. We are in the top 10, but like 7th I think. I found a State Farm that gave one number, found another that had 3x that, etc. so internet stats are useless.

EV come with a different set of issues to worry about. :(
