80% it is enough while 20% you will be glad to have a high MP crop or full frame body. Sometimes if you have enough length high humidity and high temperature forces you to go closer because the air shimmers.

I would love to see Canon make an EF 1200mm f/8L IS lens with 6 or more stops of IS that weighs less than 6kg. But we'd have to wait for a 1D body that can do AF @ f/8 and f/11 AF at the center. Price would be $15-20k?

While updating my hotlinks I found this quote about a future lens. It looks like my estimate from Nov 02, 2009 came true.

Canon RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM (external link)

- 1200mm Focal Length
- f/8 Maximum Aperture
- 4-Stop Image Stabilizer + IBIS
- 3.34 kg weight
- $19,999 (external link)

the camera would be $15-20k? or the lens? Of the above mentioned, I'd reckon the lens to cost $100,000 or more.

Back in 2013 I said if I ever get my hands on this lens I would make sure this thread stays active. Well, I have owned this lens for six years now so it is time I chip in.

Lovely image. Was wondering if I was the last one to be holding the EF 800mm

Haha, no, I still have mine. Mighty fine optics and with its value dropping who knows if I could ever justify selling it!

Awesome image!

How does your R5 handle with your EF 800mm?

R5 handles the 800 plus RF adaptor really well with many technical improvements over my old 1D IV - especially high ISO (early morning birding), more pixels, improved autofocus (eye detect) and through the viewfinder "exposure view".

I had a lot of initial R5 issues related to Lightroom/Adobe process changes at the time I got the R5 (not related to lens compatibility). I found it much more time-consuming to process correctly exposed and in-focus images with the R5 than with the 1D IV.
With the 1DIV it was basically an exposure tweak and a couple of sliders in Lightroom, plus or minus minor-cropping, 20 seconds maximum, to process a good image with great colours/saturation/tones.
With the R5 (at the time) I found that Lightroom R5 colour profiles were crap for bird photos and the work-arounds (pre-import to Lightroom) were very time consuming.

I've had a bit of a break from photography since I got the R5, mostly life getting in the way of hobbies, but also suffering a general frustration with time spent processing bird images rather than photo-capturing, which shouldn't have been required for correctly exposed images.
I've just got back into photography over the last few weeks and the Lightroom R5 colour profiles seem to have improved. A big task for me at the moment is re-importing my historical images to Lightroom from a backup drive due to hardware issues last year.

Thank you for your feedback.

My guess is you received your R5 in 2020?

Yes, Nov 2020.

Explains your Adobe issues. There's a lag time between 3rd party software working with the latest and greatest.
