I just discovered this thread. There are some incredibly talented lunatics (sorry, selenophiles) on this site!

Here are a couple of my recent efforts with a Canon R7 on an Orion (USA) XT-10 telescope (1200mm, f/4.7).

Prime focus, plus coma corrector (GSO) that acts like a 1.1x extender. Also cropped in post.

Next night, projected from a 31mm eyepiece (Baader Hyperion Aspheric) 86mm to sensor, plus 1.1x coma corrector. Also cropped in post.

This is a 1600x1600 crop of a telescopic view of our Moon from 27th Feb 2023.

Taken with a Tak Mewlon 210 F11.5 telescope, with x1.6 Extender and a Player One Saturn Square Mono CMOS Camera.

The crater Daguerre Y is 3kms dia.

Cheers

Dennis

This capability comes from an advanced speech-to-text AI Algorithm in the camera. :p

I ask SIRI to identify the main objects in the FOV and then annotate them, via BT, in real-time and in-camera.:-)

The main limitation is that I cannot control the font, font size and colour, and it only understands Queen's English.;-)a

Cheers

Dennis

There’s a site called astrometry.net where you can upload images of star fields, and it will try to identify them. The upload link is a little bit buried but it’s here (external link). I think one of the principals (Dustin Lang) got his PhD from implementing it.

I was thinking that it would be great if somebody would make something similar for moon images. It’s probably more complicated because lunar features are two dimensional (and often irregular), whereas stars can be treated as points, but the core algorithm to find patterns in the locations may be largely reusable. Know any CS grad students looking for a thesis topic?

Virtual Moon Atlas - https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualmoon/ (external link) - free software for Moon observation and survey. Let you visualize the real Moon aspect at every time. I use it to identify objects on the Moon and find out craters dimensions, it's depth and lot other information. You can spin the Moon and see what is on the other side.

There was also the Lunar Terminator Visualisation tool which similarly visualised the current moon phase/libration etc, but you could input your image, register on two known points, then the software automatically annotated for you.

I still have it installed but it doesn't look like the official site is online anymore, I'm sure it can be found somewhere though.

This one of the Moon 1 day before full, is a two frame composite taken from Brisbane on 6th March 2023 through my Tak Mewlon 210 F11.5 telescope with a QHY268M CMOS camera.:-)

Cheers

Dennis

EDIT:
Added a full resolution 1600x1600 crop from a section of the composite to show how much detail is in the image.
