Such a good resource for the past couple decades, and even with Amazon purchasing them years prior, now they are closing down shop. :(

Further impacts from reduced camera sales and manufacturing… I am going to miss using their studio comparison tool.

We will soon lose a heap of domain knowledge about the epic transition from analog to digital photography. For example, DPR had contributors who appreciated Nikkor AI lenses and could cite what combo of lens and DSLR worked well. It's a loss equivalent to the USENET archives evaporating.

Wow.
Is everything closing down, I mean also the forums?

They are going to button up some things, and then it will go into a read only mode for a period of time. Likely around a year or so, and then near the next cycle of billing for site/domain, etc is usually when these close down. I put my own online business through this, and will likely completely shut it down in August when my renewals all fire.

I was heartbroken to see that news. When I first saw it my immediate reaction was to think it was an April Fools joke but we’re a week and a half away from that unfortunately. I downloaded hundreds of their sample images when I was looking to move away from Fujifilm and making a decision would have been so much harder without that ability. It’s horrible how much content and information will be disappearing soon. Not only their website, but also the forums had a massive amount of useful information.

I don’t know the legalities or how any of this works but I’m hoping there is some way they can sell the site to some other entity. Even if no new articles or reviews are posted I hate the idea of losing everything that’s currently on the site. I saw in the comments on one of their articles about this that people we’re discussing crowdfunding or subscriptions to keep the website going and both of those are things I would support and take part in.

Your thread title "what a shame..." is exactly right, Cary. The site and the forums too contain a wealth of knowledge, it's a real repository. How often I have searched for something and ended up finding the answer there. That will all be lost then. Pretty sad.

I joined in 2013 but did not participate a lot. I found some of the members there to be arrogant and jerks at times and why I came here instead. But agree it was a great resource.

I have been on DPReview since the beginning. Years ago I was on the digital photography newsgroup and Phil Askey announced he was starting a site call DPReview. Sad to see it go. Amazon keeps shutting down good services and letting go there employees.

Sad to see this resource go away. Hopefully they can keep the old content still accessible. No need to delete everything. I can see shutting down new forum exchanges and reviews, basically lay off all the people, but it takes almost nothing to keep the data accessible. Will be nothing new, but as someone mentioned above, there is a wealth of data on their site.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Seems Amazon is deleting the site rather than selling it? Damn.

While Amazon has no apparent interest in continuing to operate DPReview, one would think they would be open to the idea of retaining the rights to the database, but allowing someone to access a copy of that database for diseminating the pool of information. May it is an opportunity for POTN to explore. Is having access to that data worthwile to POTN membership to be willing to pay a small stipend that is then paid to Amazon?! Similarly the Mike Butkus database of user manuals is, at least for now, continuing to operate only thru his wife (my understanding)...and one day that valuable resource will also be lost!

Sad to see it go as I used their in-depth print reviews quite a bit. On the other hand I was already tired of the ever-increasing number of Chris and Jordan videos.
