As a side note, the lack of in-built flash in R7 is really frustrating. So the first system is now unfortunately obsolete.

I like how you rigged LEDs to the diffuser. Where did you get them?

I never used the popup flash for macro because it wasn't powerful enough and the flash duration was too long (around 1/500) which can give motion blur. Just put a speedlite in the hot shoe of the R7. It gives enough light at fractional power and flash duration is short.

That second rig is really elaborate.

I really like the look of the diffuser plus leds - where did you get it from?

The LEDs in the first system are just relatively high power LEDs from electronics shop. They are nothing special - just something they had. The other components are the small resistors and the black one, which is the critical part, but I can't remember the name right now. The diffusor is a plastic plate, which I somewhat modified with a Dremel. Now it attaches to the bayonet fixing, so I need one for each lens I want to use. In my case that makes two.

My experience is different. The power is just enough for ISO 400 and f/10 or so. I don't use it with MP-E, so 1/500 is actually quite fast. It also doesn't work with 180mm due to distance to diffusor and from diffusor to object, but with 60mm and 100mm macros it is quite nice.

As far as the R7 goes, a speedlite by itself sits too high. It would need some way to angle it down. I suspect I'll just use MT-24EX, but I don't like the size and added weight in hand luggage.

That second rig is really elaborate.

Thanks! That one has LEDs too. They are under the Aluminum L-profiles. Those are cut from daylight LED strips I ordered from the manufacturer. That diffusor I designed and had 3D printed at Shapeways.

Thanks for the comments, J.K.T.! I will investigate the LEDs but might not need them with the electronic viewfinder of the R7.

Yes, I guess the popup flash would be good at your conditions. I like to shoot at a lower ISO and f/11 or even f/13. But OK, it is a matter of preference. For a few years now I have used a 580EX. Yes, it shoots too high, but that can be solved by fixing a reflective snoot from the flash head to the rim of the diffuser. I use Velcro along the edge. The snoot also stabilizes the setup against a breeze.

My snoot is made from a sheet of old resin-coated photographic paper with aluminum foil glued to one side. So it is resistant to rain.

We would love to see some of your shots.

A) Do you like the cygnustech diffuser?
B) How long did it take to arrive in the UK?

I like it, it works very well. It only took about 2 to 3 weeks to arrive.

It has been far too long since I've posted anything here. I use the Kuangren dual head flash. Although the diffuser is overly complicated, it has many unique features that others may find useful.
> Let's start with the bodies of the twin diffusers. These are 7" slanted bowls that you can buy from PlasticPro on Amazon.

The bowls are attached so the short sides are toward the lens and the long sides are toward the outside. This allows one to wrap around the subject. But you can move them to face in other directions.

The inside of the diffusers are lined with silvery HVAC tape. The diffusing material is 3 spaced layers of 100% nylon trim fabric -- Which is great at spreading the light although it also lets a lot of light straight thru which is why I use 3 layers of it with about 1" between layers. I would say the diffusion is pretty good, but not without some issues. I've put a priority on flexibility since I can put the diffusers in close on different macro lenses that differ in diameter and focal length, and I can change out lenses quickly. Here is an example taken with the 100mm macro + a Raynox lens.

I maybe should stop here. You can follow the pictures to my two Flickr pages and to a Facebook page if you really want to know all the nit-picky details and see more critter pictures.
Cheers!
