Here is another Walnut Sphinx moth. They are fairly common in my area. One interesting thing about them, is that the caterpillar will make a squeaking sound when threatened, by scrunching up like a concertina, forcing air out of its spiracles.

The second is a Spotted Apatelodes moth. I usually find one or two of their cats feeding on leaves of some Pawpaw tree that I regularly visit in hopes of finding Zebra Swallowtail cats, which is the only host plant for that species.

Here are some assorted night time images of larger moths. The first three used the built-in flash with a diffusor shown in here. The last two used MT-24EX with the little Sto-Fen diffusor cups. The primary purpose of my Moth images is record and identification, so I usually leave the artistic angles to others. :-)

Nice JKT, is that mating pair of Eugnorisma depunctums a wingless female? If so, she will probably be soon laying her eggs pretty close by. Thanks for sharing.

The female A. marginaria is indeed wingless ... or at least the wings are pretty small. :)

It probably should do it soon here as well, but we just had 15cm snow ... so the mothing season is postponed.

Last weekend I spotter this hurd, or what do you call a grouping of caterpillars? They were about 12’ up on the side of an oak tree, so I grabbed a 6’ ladder that was close and went up about 4 steps, and managed to get a few snaps holding my arm up and out. On the way down, both ladder legs away from the tree started sinking into the ground. I managed to hurriedly step down one, while falling to the ground, but didn’t break anything in me or the camera.
The first is about 150 Forest Tent Caterpillars.

And the second image is a male moth some will become.

Here are a couple of closer shots of the above.
Forest Tent Caterpillars. I think I read somewhere that grouping together like this make them look like a single organism too large for a bird to take on.

Cool patterns. I've seen these but never thought of taking a picture of the pests. Nice images.

I'll add a few more night time moths. These are quite a bit smaller than the previous set.

Dyseriocrania subpurpurella
Tokina 100mm f/2.8
Flash likely Canon MT-24EX with Sto-Fen diffusors.
Might have used Kenko 1.4x or extension tubes...

IMAGE: http://jkt.1g.fi/Xtra/IMGs/PotN-03-1.jpg

Plutella xylostella
Same equipment as previous

IMAGE: http://jkt.1g.fi/Xtra/IMGs/PotN-03-2.jpg

The last two are a reminder why I take these pictures as well as a show of equipment limits. These ones are small.

Unnamed species - barcode exists, but species has not yet been described
Canon EOS 7D + Kenko 1.4x + ~16mm extension + EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro with internal flash and DIY diffusor from plastic plate.
Note that the Kenko doesn't show in the EXIF data!

IMAGE: http://jkt.1g.fi/Xtra/IMGs/PotN-03-3.jpg

Anatrachyntis badia - new to La Gomera
Canon EOS R7 + RF2x + EF 100mm f/2.8 with MT-24EX and Sto-Fen diffusors
Note that RF TCs don't show in EXIF with EF lenses!

I missed getting down to Frogwarts the weekend of April 1-2 because a tornado tore a path across Little Rock AR. While I watched it from a high-rise condo with a friend who’s mom was at home in the path. It turned out that she, 95yo, is so hard of hearing, she didn’t even know that a neighbor’s gable landed on her roof without her even knowing what was happening outside.

However I also have family with properties in the same neighborhood who were not at home, so I took it upon myself to go check on those two houses. I keep a good chainsaw in my truck, so when I got to where the streets were blocked with trees, and a gathering crowd of people wanting to get down into that neighborhood to see if they still had a roof or house for the evening, I started sawing. Three hours later, with many of them helping by pulling away the branches as fast as I could saw, we broke through the other side, to find our properties were untouched. Then I started helping friends with roof repairs.

Finally back down and out on the trail I found a few things. The first is a Wavy Emerald moth; Synchlora iridaria, on American Hornbeam leaf.

This second odd looking creature is a White-dotted Prominent moth, that landed on the back of a Cicada exuvia.
