I am thinking of getting a film SLR and have narrowed down my choices between these 2. The reason I want the F3 is purely because of the retro look it has. The operation doesnt bother me as I am already a user of rangefinders. But should I get this over the new modern 1v? Lenses are not an issue as I have to get new ones for them anyway as my current lenses are all for crop cameras only.

*Way* different camera's.
Both are nice, but they really are not comparable.

F3 has an interchangeable viewfinder, a (hard to read in the dark) LCD (check the LCD when buying!), is all manual, with an Av setting, can be operated at one shutterspeed without a battery.
Also, it's heavy and loud when driven by motordrive ;)
Eos 1V is the 1D, only shooting film...

Both are incomparable to a rangefinder.

If you want a bit more retro, have a look at an F2 (although I prefer an F3 or F4 functionally speaking)

The 1v is a beautiful camera. If you have to buy lenses anyway, why not get the 1v? At least you can use those lenses directly with your digital camera...

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah they both in totally different classes of camera. I just wanted to get a film slr to mess around with. I guess 1v is the way to go then since it would probably last longer and retain its value better than an already old F3?

I'd think the F3 would retain it's value better, since they're practically given away these days ;)

You should take a look at the EOS3, which has features comparable to the 1V (45 point AF) but can be had for a fraction of the price. I really dig the eye controlled focus feature ...

Discovery is not accidental. We discover only when we make ourselves ready to receive and photographers seek discovery by mastering their craft. But it begins somewhere else. It begins with daisies, kids, awful scenes, falling in love, or growing old. It begins with that which matters to you. And it ends with visual statements that express what matters to you about these things. It is not sight the camera satisfies so thoroughly, but the mind. - Christian Molidor

Considering your preferences and requirements, I would recommend the Nikon F3 over the EOS 1-v. Although both cameras are excellent, the Nikon F3 suits your needs better.

One of the reasons you mentioned for liking the Nikon F3 is due to its retro appearance. I understand the attraction as the F3 has a classic design that is still admired today and is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic cameras of all time. Additionally, the F3 is a delight to operate and handle. Although manual focus, if you are already a rangefinder user, this camera will be easy to adapt to.

Furthermore, the F3 is compatible with various Nikon lenses, which is another advantage. While you mentioned that lenses are not an issue as you plan to get new ones anyway, it's worth noting that Nikon lenses are widely available and often more affordable than Canon lenses. Plus, the F3's sturdy build quality ensures longevity, and it's safe to say it can last for years to come.

F3 has somewhat "retro" look. I never considered it as it is electronics based. While my film base is no electronics rangefinders.

EOS 1v.... as any film EOS it has odd, defunct, pricy battery. Some EOS have regular AA battery grips (not easy to find), but I doubt EOS 1V has this option.

If you want retro, but reliable one and with electronics for metering, I used Nikkormat.

I had top of the line eye focus film EOS and pro-consumer Elan with less AF points eye focus.
Both needed overpriced, odd battery.

If you want most sufficient film EOS, get film Rebel. I have EOS300 since 1998 and it still works, with rechargeable batteries available on eBay.
Add 50 1.8 EF mount lens and 22-55 EF zoom and you are golden. :)

I have Nikon F, F2 and F3 cameras sitting on a shelf right behind me. If I ever got the notion to play with film again, I'd go out and find an FM2.

Pros could configure an F3 to do whatever kind of work they did. Every accessory Nikon made had a version that fit the F3 and a lot of them only the F3. You had your choice of finders, screens, meters, backs, motors, whatever. I built mine for speed. The MD-4 motor was what I liked best about it. Plus it was bulletproof and I beat the crud out of mine. If you go with an F3, get a beat up one if you really want street cred.

But I always carried an FM2 as a second body. Much simpler but no less competent. If you don't use an F3 every day, you'll have a hard time getting comfortable with it. Mine scares me now. And don't worry, you'll get your retro cred with an FM2. It seems to be coveted by the film crowd now. They're hard to find and pretty expensive compared to other SLRs - even F3s. I've looked and I get it.

I got into photography in high school and learned the craft on broken-down swapmeet SLRs. I learned, in that world, never trust the meter. I got an incident meter early on and never really learned to work with a camera meter. With an FM2, I'm pretty sure the only thing the battery runs is the meter. If you have film, you can take shots.

I don't know what an EOS 1-v is.

Edit: I was just thinking. I sold my last FM2 and my 180mm 2.8 and bought a space-age Nikon 8008 and an autofocus zoom lens. Worst trade of my life. What a piece of dung, that 8008. That's the last film camera I bought. Is that anything like a 1-V?

Since you mentioned that you will be getting new lenses for the camera, I would like to suggest that you check out this website https://lensespro.org/best-lenses-for-nikon-f3/ (external link)

For instance, the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S is an excellent lens for portrait photography, while the Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 AI-S is ideal for landscape and street photography. Other popular lenses for the F3 include the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI-S, Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-S, and Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 AI-S.
