I like your images. The rubber thread on the wheels reminded me of a story my father would tell; his father had a steam tractor that he rent out to neighbours. It was my father's job to remove all the spikes from the wheels before the tractor could travel from one farm to the next, and then put it all back again at the destination.

Yes those spikes would cause havoc to a road surface and probably the wheel on hard concrete, bitumen etc.
Here they have to be careful not to run over, yet alone park on a manhole cover.
Apparently ram them down so hard making almost impossible to remove
