Okay, not to be a buzzkill, but you're an accomplished photographer, so I would expect excellent images from you. The real questions for me anyway; has this lens replaced anything in your line up, and is this going to be a practical lens going forward for your workflow?

Not a buzzkill at all and a valid question. For me it replaced my EF 200-400mm ( was my last EF lens) and it replaced the 100-500mm also. I have always liked the internal zoom over extending barrel zoom. I was thinking it was going to replace my 70-200mm but the size difference I do not think that will be wise at this point but a possibility. This will make an excellent travel lens when need to go light and smaller. I will have 100-600mm @ f2.8 to f5.6. This lens has amazed me with the 2x actually. I would not replace say something like my 400 f2.8, that is my all time favorite.

The weight savings over the 200-400mm is very nice.

As an aside, I just shot a Highland Games competition, primarily using my EF 300 f/2.8 II.
I would have loved to have had the versatility of the RF 100-300.
A lot of times, 300mm was too long, and I could not 'zoom with my feet'.

The same reasoning, plus the fact that several are now migrating from the "most equivalent" EF lens to RF, thus EF lenses can be acquired at substantially lower cost than to buy a new one, led me to get a used EF 200-400 mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X. Has flexibility around the 300 mm instead of just below it, with the added benefit of built-in "overdrive".
The image result is quite different, but I do have both the EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6L IS USM and the EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM when I need to do down to shorter focal lengths. Can't carry all of it...

Some lenses have that special, difficult to describe, but some characteristics in the pictures they generate that just is... special. I've experienced it with my EF 300 mm f/2.8L IS II USM, and I feel the EF 200-400 mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X does give the same feeling. Like in these pictures. The sharpness of the subject combined with that dreamy background.

This article from Canon was linked within the article in post #59 above.

I have read it before and knowing me, probably posted this before.
Still it is an excellent article:

https://www.canon.co.uk …f2.8l-is-usm-development/ (external link)

I'd be really happy with this lens!
I am glad that it exists.

+++++++

My spouse is often subjected to long-winded oratories of mine of the “je ne sais quoi” of certain lenses; often regarding lenses that I do not even own.

I'm glad that robamy is keeping his RF 400 2.8 as he stated above.
For me, that is the ultimate lens of its type, producing a certain 'look'.
