Out for a night with the cigar club, took some phots on the night but forgot my gift bag (containing a few cigars and some gin, chocolate and other nice things), as I'd gotten a call saying a friend of mine committed suicide a short time into the event - totally sucked the energy out of me so I left early. Thankfully the guys took it back to their store with them so I can go pick it up during the week. Good people and as always nice to see my images being used in their printed material and adverts.

Anyone using:

Viltrox 23mm F1.4

Tamron 17-70 F2.8

Curious as to thoughts on AF performance, sharpness, CA, wide open, etc?

Very best,

Very best,

A Fuji photographer friend was using a Tamron 17-70/2.8 last time I was out with him, he was raving about it, kinda like it was the only lens he was ever going to need or use.

I'll get the hang of this macro thing yet, it flew away before I could nab a few more frames & that's a pity as those hairs on the wing tips looked amazing.]

This isn't a direct answer, but I think it's worth a note. I haven't used the Viltrox 23mm, but I have briefly used the Viltrox 33mm, which launched at the same time as the 23mm and 56mm.

Compared to the Tokina 33mm that I do own, the Viltrox seems superior in sharpness. AF seems similar. And those two lenses are rumored to be from the same factory if not clones.

As a final note, I'm routinely shooting the Viltrox 13mm and 75mm, and they are stunning performers IMO.

Thanks both,

Was looking at inexpensive options to get AF on some lenses and WR on another.

I currently have a Samyan 21mm F1.4 and I like it a lot, had it a few years now, I very much like the 21~23mm focal length on APS-C and faster is better for me. I usually do fine without AF and do manual focus all day with the flip down screen and high lighting. But, I'm getting lazier and lazier and there's so many times I just wish I had decent AF and continous AF tracking since I'm using an X-T3 body and I love using my 18-55 and 55-200 lenses when I want AF as they just keep focus and are sharp and I have no complaints there. I do however want to gain some AF one on my favorite prime focal length and keep speed. But I don't want a $500+ lens so the Viltrox 23mm F1.4 was peaking my interest at $300 new.

I like my 18-55 a lot, but I am wanting to get some WR since I generally use it in nasty conditions here in Florida. My last trip over a week ago I was at the beach and it was fine, but I took a few splashes and didn't care if anything died. I'm in stormy weather often and ultimately just thinking I'd like to get some WR and so the Tamron 17-70 F2.8 has weather sealing and is only $699 new, I like the range, it's got a bit more length than the Fuji 16-50 and same speed. I've had Tamron lenses in the past and they were all fantastic. I doubt I'll find this lens used though. Just seems like if I wanted to get a WR "do all" zoom it seems to check all the boxes without being too costly.

I'd like to add that Fuji 50-140 WR eventually but I find myself not needing it nearly as often since the 55-200 already does most of what that lens does for my purposes/needs, so I haven't felt a strong need to trade to that. I don't need longer focal lengths at this stage as I stopped doing the long stuff and chasing birds and things when I sold my Canon kit years ago. I use my Fuji more often for my family, weather, landscape, marco and family-friend-photojournalism. But if I stumbled on one for a good price I'd be tempted.

Ultimately though my primary interest is the 21~23mm range with speed (F1.4 to F2, favoring faster always). No need for WR on these, but definitely starting to feel the want to AF again after years of manual lens use. I'm just lazier these days I guess.

I currently have no WR lenses, so I just wanted a good do all lens for that for when I'm in nasty weather or wet areas, which is most of Florida daily. That's where the Tamron came to mind.

Exploring a bit. I didn't know Fuji finally had good 3rd party lenses from Tamron, Sigma, etc, and that lenses from Viltrox and Artisans and others were coming with AF now and still pretty inexpensive. Nice to have options!

Very best,

I have the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 and 33mm f1.4. I find them both equally sharp and accurate. Quick to focus, pretty sharp wide open but some purple fringing in high contrast areas at 1.4. Nothing unusual

That said, nothing that can’t be corrected in post.

For the money, I think they’re great

Gave it a go to try and photograph one of the supermoons this month. Nothing great, but I am amazed (like always) at the technical difficulty of finding and shooting these images, especially if you're after Blue Hour and only have 8-13 minutes. I think I found a better spot for end of August; seems the moon will rise along some railroad tracks in a small down 40 minutes from me.

This is around 135mm on the X-T3, so not able to take full advantage of the 300mm due to the geography of the spot I picked.

Found my kitten, she was hiding inside a popup soft box!
Happy out all the same, she squeezed through the small hole at the bowed mount.
