There doesn't seem to be a dedicated forum for this awesome little camera. So let's start one!
I purchased my R8 in late May as a tentative step in the Canon Mirrorless world and I have to say that I'm rather impressed with it.

Since then I've sold both my legacy EOS 5DmkIII camera bodies and I've gone mirrorless. I'm retaining all of my collection of EF glass because I've not seen any pressing advantage with the RF glass.

I'm using the Meike Drop in adapter with my R8, which neatly gets around the issue of the exposed sensor!

I have a Canon 5D and can't stop thinking about moving to mirrorless camp, tired of missing AF shots with my 5D.
Looks like R8 is a very good replacement for me.

I was in the same quandary a few months ago. As a matter of fact, I pre-ordered an R8...

Then I realized that it did not had IBIS (In-Body Stabilization) which, in my advancing age is a must. I ordered the R6II and am very happy with it.

Along with IBIS, you get a full mechanical shutter in addition to the 1st Curtain Electronic, and Electronic shutter.I shoot mostly Mechanical Shutter. Also, you get a more capable battery and a more capacious buffer. These are all nice to haves, in contrast with the IBIS which if absent is a deal-breaker for me.

I understand that R8/R6II share the same sensor. Compared to my previous 60D/5DIII whose RAW files were clinical, the R6II offers very nice files, rather similar to the 5D. I like working with them.

I use exclusively EF lenses with the ring adapter and find no fault with them. They work better than on my 5DIII...

In conclusion, I urge you to buy either the R8, or the R6II, the step from the 5D is a truly giant one!

I have both the R8 and R6ii and the lack of IBIS in the R8 isn't a deal breaker for me.
I don't miss the mechanical shutter eitehr..that's loud, shouty and full of camera shake.
The extra fps in 1st Curtain is welcome and the higher rez / slightly larger EVF is nice too.
The smaller battery is a bit of an annoyance. I regularly have 2 spares just in case, but a lot of the R8's battery usage is down to how you shoot.
I seem to be able to eek out a single battery on my R8 for most of a day's shoot.
However, my 2nd photographer...."Mr Gimper" seems to eat batteries every hour.

The R8 is a fine camera and for me it makes a really cool and useable 2nd camera body. I think for a lot of photographers, the EOS R8 is all they will ever need.

Here's a pair of images to show some versatility:

The R8 would be an amazing upgrade in every aspect of your current camera's capability. The AF is simply amazing, it can take a while to work out how you want to use it and how to set the customisable buttons to kick in the Eye focus servo and to quickly select the other AF Zones.

You will find that the files on the EOS R8 are brighter, lower iso noise and have a far wider dynamic range than your current 5D.

I recently got an R8 and am quite pleased with it.
The three images below were all taken with my EF70-200 F4L lens using Canons EF-EOS R mount adapter.

My previous 80D never would have focus on Vanta's eyes the way this camera does.

Here's a photo I took a few days ago of my Dad with his first meeting with my newborn Grand Daughter, Zoe.
Some people have informed me that the old EF 24-70mm f2.8 L isn't particularly sharp...well..I often say it's more about the light and mood.
My copy has always been sharp enough. I'm finding my EF glass has been given a new lease of life on the R8. It's AF is far easier to lock than any of my older DSLR's ever were.

I've noticed a lot of comments abou the R8 over heating in video or prolonged stills. I have to say that I've not encountered this issue with my R8.
However, I have noticed the grip gets very hot when i use my R8 as my teams video camera. It's a really nice feature that the Teams / zooom drivers are now embedded in the camera and no longer requires the additonal EOS Webcam Utility.
In some really long teams meeting, my R8's battery would nearly be depleated and it would be really hot.
So I recently bought a DC power coupler and PSU so I could power my R8 on video calls from the mains. I also wanted to reduce the battery cahrge / discharge wear because I was using two battery charges per day.
The Amazon DC coupler works great, but more interestingly is that the camera stays a lot cooler. So I'm wondering if the camera over heating reports are actually battery cooling / overheating issues not a sensor heat issue. I suspect the excess heat generated by the small battery is picked up and triggers the heat sensor in the camera.

I've recently been reviewing my lens collection as well as my camera bodies.
My trusty old EF 24-70mm f2.8 L is my stalwart and old friend. However my copy is over 15 years old and had seen well over 45 weddings, numerous family shoots and events.
It's easily the most versatile lens that I've ever owned and it's often said that it's the jack of all trades and the master of none. I don't quite agree with the statement, it's a lens that can do an awful lot very well in the right hands. Many profressional photographers have made a living out of this one single lens. It focuses very close, only recently matched by the RF version. It's a contrasty lens, maybe not the sharpest but this lens delivers in circumstances that others don't. On the R6ii it's limited to 7fps (not an issue on the R8) and it's AF is a wee bit slower than other lenses. It can do depth of field effects at the 70mm end very easily. It's not quite in the 85mm f1.2II L league, but it's rendering is very nice.

So swapping this lens out for a newer model was always going to be a difficult task for me. Partly becuase the old lens was so well known to me. But it's time to move on and buy a replacement that will last me the next 15 years of use. I've rented the EF 24-70mm f2.8 mk II several times and I liked it alot. But my concearns were at the close focus distance. While I may be gaining better flare cotnrol and far better sharpness wide open, I would be loosing that glorious close focus that was so easy with the Mk1.
Did I want to jump for the newer RF version? Optically it's pretty much the same as the mkII EF version. It's mostly the same size and weight. The both cam access the high FPS of the R6ii (not an issue on the R8)..however with the EF version I have the ability to use drop in filters in the EF to R adapter and that's really important to me.

So I gave the newer EF mkII another try and initially I was very unsure. I wasn't getting the shots I liked from my garden flowers...however...when i used a EF 12mm extenstion tube...I found what I was looking for. This extension tube allowed me to exceed what I could obtain wiht my older mk1 lens and I like the results a lot. finaly a worthy sucessor...as long as I remember to drop this wee little extension tube into my camera bag.

So these images are from my garden this morning using the extension tube and a drop in CPL. I needed the polariser to tame the wet highlights and even out the scene's contrast.

The results aren't quite as good as a EF 100mm L Is Macro, but they are pretty good and about 85% as useful. So If I'm out and about with jus tthe one lens...it will cover most of what I need without taking several other lenses with me.
