I could only get a back of body composition this morning as the Paper Wasps snoozed on their nest.:-)

I used a stack of 15 frames to increase the DOF.

I managed to get a different angle on the Paper Wasps this morning, although as I maneuvered the tripod I hit the foliage and their wings deployed temporarily before settling down again.:-)

This was 17 frames stacked in Helicon Focus.

I used a NISI macro rail and turned the screw a ¼ turn inwards, took a shot then repeated for the sequence, hoping that antennae and legs would not move too much between frames.

How much touch-up are you having to do after the stack? I have found in my experience I have to do quite a bit...even with helicon. Personally I've had better success with layers in photoshop but that could just be me.

It could also be that my process is lacking.

Hi John

With this particular set, both PS CC and Helicon Focus (Method C) produced near identical results, although Helicon screams through the process in a few seconds compared to the 2 to 3 minutes that PS takes. The Wasps stayed quite calm as it was still in the relative cool of the early morning. I would not attempt this once they had become too active as there is far too much body movement between frames.

I sometimes have to touch up an antenna tip when it is rendered as multiple tips in the stack, by finding the frame with the sharpest antenna and then using a Layer to blend it in with the composite image.

If there is too much movement between frames I find it just isn't worth trying to rescue the image as it involves too much work and the results are not that pleasing.

These Wasp shots are almost like a controlled studio set up in that the camera is tripod mounted, I use the NISI macro rail and the subjects are quite still in the morning, not your typical macro scenario.:-)
