Somewhere I had an amazing set of street photo forum rules from a different website, but no luck. I found myself reading from google results, including the Britannica entry on the topic. It’s a bit history-heavy. Image search gave a good sampling.

There’s a lot of definitions out there and most are at least partially valid.

Here's the thing. There are a lot of definitions among POTN members as well. My understanding differs from yours. The next person's will differ from mine. Who's to bring down the gavel when an objection is raised?

It’s a tough-to-define category . . .

Indeed. You introduced the thread like this:

I doubt anyone does much more B&W than me, but sometimes color just adds to the image. I didn't see any place to post color street work so I'm starting this. Anyone?

That's so open-ended as to allow all kinds of definitions. Then, among your first few photos in the thread, which presumably illustrate what you had in mind, it isn't even always clear that the subjects are outdoors. So I have a hard time with the idea that many of us have been getting it wrong all these years.

If someone has a problem with a post, they can always click on the "Report" button next to each post. Until that happens and the moderators step in anything posted is probably fine.

it seems that nearly every thread in this forum has images that run counter to what some or all of us might consider the proper type image. like Headshots, that are portraits from head to waist, vs head and just barely containing the shoulders. as just ONE example

i wont belabor the point nor will i any longer point out that X photo doesnt really fit the genre of the forum...

from Wikipedia:

"A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expressions are predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer. "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portrait (external link)

So a portrait can be anything from a headshot to a full body shot. I think it is just best to take the title of the thread as a guide rather than to try to impose limits that may be too restrictive, of course you will always get disagreements between people as to what should be included or excluded, that's what makes us individuals.

i didnt say anything about PORTRAITS. the thread is POST YOUR HEADSHOTS (capitalized in the thread title) here:: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1380279

in the first post by the OP, he states "Post your best head shots! ( Head and shoulders only )"

Whoa, I'm not trying to start an argument, I was quoting a "for instance" in much the same way as you were.

Anyway we are both off topic so let's just leave it at that.
