Those "in the know" say we are expecting a warmer Winter this year in our area. I'm ok with that. My energy bill sky rocketed last year with the Arctic temps, and has only this month just come back to normal.

Turns out it was a Preying mantis, with the wings out, looked just like a humming bird. Anyhow I called the family out to see her. Took a bit of coaxing but she climbed into my hand so I could re-locate her to the garden. It's amazing how she would turn her head to watch my every move. I put her on a lavender plant and let her chill. My wife came out 10 minutes later and she was eating a bumble bee. She hung around for an hour but eventually disappeared. I only see 1 a year on average since moving out of the city. I feel lucky. They are luck, right?

The mantis comes to us when we need peace, quiet and calm in our lives. Usually the mantis makes an appearance when we've flooded our lives with so much business, activity, or chaos that we can no longer hear the still small voice within us because of the external din we've created. Was fascinated when this came up. Lately I could use this, hope it's true. That is one AMAZING story Chet! WOW!! Charles

Last week when I was leaving, there was one sitting on the door handle of my garage. We stared at each other and it finally moved over so I could open the door and leave. I didn't know about it being a reminder of peace, quiet and calm, something seriously needed right now. Very cool. Thanks, Chet.

You said "One summer", is there a reason you never did it again? Mantis are excellent at pest control. We had an issue with Japanese beetles and crickets that they pretty much cleared that right up. Unfortunately, they are not picky eaters and would decimate everything including other manti. That's a cricket she's munching on but they went after catapillars, butterflies, bees, spiders, anything they could get their grubby claw on. Not sure why, but call me JJ.

It preys, too, but it isn't named for that. Image hosted by forum (1228300) © OhLook [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.
