Not like a chameleon. But they do adapt to the environment that they were born/live in. At least the European ones do.

By natural selection over long times, or do individuals actually modify their color? Another shot of the same mantis:

This was on a trail in Ahwahnee Meadow, Oct. 2. The fall storms wouldn't have started yet. You can see that the grass was dry; it dies every summer. The current webcam view (external link) From memory, I think the mantises I've found in the backyard were green, consistent with foliage there.

Hmmm. This is what Google claims:

The praying mantis is one type that can change color from green to brown and vice versa. While in its nymph phase, the praying mantis can take on a brownish hue after molting. However, this change occurs gradually, over several days. Needless to say, this ability is not useful for quick camouflage.

It seemed the one I saw was a vibrant green, though my kid said it was brown. Hence my question if they're chameleon like.

The leaves are also both colors. This mantis was very adaptable!

I'll have to ask him. Cam was practicing "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" said backwards. Julie Andrews actually does it wrong in the song. Cam does it correctly, it took him a few tries.

Have him get started in cold fusion. Might as well put that mind to work on something useful.

It's just the head and neck. I stared at it until I figured it out. The mantis is facing right. The two wire-looking things are antennae.

Why don’t you feed your wife some proper food? Cruel Chet

Mantis are excellent at pest control. We had an issue with Japanese beetles and crickets that they pretty much cleared that right up. Unfortunately, they are not picky eaters and would decimate everything including other manti. That's a cricket she's munching on but they went after catapillars, butterflies, bees, spiders, anything they could get their grubby claw on.

I'm actually really OK with them going after all the insects. Particularly the bees and spiders. Can they do anything about chipmunks? I have a sizable community of them in my yard.

And now for the weather. Yesterday was close to, if it didn't hit 90. Today's high is 72, and by Friday we are looking at 59 for a high. Now THIS is Autumn!!!!

Do they change color to blend with the environment?

Good question. The one on my garage door handle was the same color as what OhLook's pic shows. Sort of an Army bland.

Trouble with killing bees is no bees, no food. That year we had a noticeable decline in apple production. We only had 6 trees but they produces a whole lot of apples. In a normal year it was not unusual to have 30~40 5 gallon buckets of apples that dropped to the ground so we composted them. The year of the mantis, we had noticeably fewer apples. Spiders are also very beneficial as they love flies and mosquitos. Cant do anything about the monks though. BB gun maybe or a hungry cat.
