Thanks Russell.:-)

The 100-300mm F2.8L is a really useful range and with the Canon x1.4 Extender is a very versatile combination. IQ and handling are excellent.

It was great in the Botanic Gardens where the wild birds are used to people, but I suspect that out in the wild, 300mm and even 420mm might be too short for the smaller birds.

Dennis

I wonder how it would compare with a 100-500 if it had a 2x on it?
600 @ 5.6 v 500 @ 7.1?

Might be worth looking into......mmmmm

Hi Russell

Duade Paton did a review using both the RF x1.4 and RFx2 Extenders here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpVSw8ARor0 (external link)

The x1.4 was excellent, but his comments on using the x2 were not so good, he felt it "struggled". I think that in his review, he also compared it to the Sony 200-600mm and I think he preferred the Sony against the 100-300mm with the RF x2.

If I recall, he felt that some of the shots (wide open at F5.6) were a little soft but when stopped down to F8, they improved.

Dennis

Thanks Lyn, they may be more common this far north. We see family groups quite often.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Thanks mate. Shame about the blurred stick in the red-head shot. I'll just have to keep trying ... :-)

Yes the hens are quite delightful when you can get near them
When accustomed to humans they are like pets
