I tried doing that a while back- constructed a ring light out of 12 bright white leds taped around a lens hood- just didn't give enough light for photographs although it was a useful aid in focusing in dim light

I prototyped a similar configuration using 12 LEDs (3 parallel circuits of 4 in series) connected to 2x 9V batteries (to give 18V) and a resistor to provide the exact 3.6V needed to power each LED. The light is very intense if the light from all LEDs converges however it's just too difficult to get them to shine on the same spot, especially at different focusing distances. Adding a diffuser helped, but ended up cutting out too much light.
I had seen a suggestion somewhere that you could drive the LEDs at 6.5V instantaneously to get a flash (and strobe) effect. Doing this makes the light extremely intense and prevents the LEDs from burning out (at least for a while anyway). I gave it a test and it seems to work well, but for all the messing around that's involved I may as well just go spend $250 on a Sigma.
