nothing big but something i came across last night, i have a 5D and the 400D. using the same lens, flash, settings, and a pic of the same object. comparing the 2 LCD display the XTi looks better, sharper and brighter, the 5D looks washed out a little bit, not as sharp....it kind of bothers me that the 400D LCD looks better then the 5D....

5D pix come out fine on the comp though

I have to admit the lcd is even better on my 10D (although a lot smaller). It is brighter and a tad more color accurate (to my eyes). Wouldn't it be great if the lcd were calibrated, bright and color accurate on Canon DSLR's? ??? :)

I wish! But the viewfinder on teh 5D is similar to the EOS 3 and that is a big difference from the 10D or 20D.

On-camera LCD screens should be for menu changes, histogram review, and reviewing composition. Don't use it to judge sharpness, exposure, or color of the actual recorded image. The screen isn't high quality enough for those.

I think it is useful for checking exposure to an extent. I've deleted many images which were wrongly exposed, and this is one of the reasons I don't personally need to shoot in RAW.

If you deleted them based on what you saw in the LCD, not because of the histogram, how do you know they were wrongly exposed? That's the whole reason people tell you to not use the LCD for judging exposure, colour balance or the like - it's not calibrated, so what you see will be determined by viewing conditions, and it's adjusted to make the picture visible under bright outdoor conditions, which will throw off your exposure assessment in any conditions.

Adding to what Jon said, how could you possibly check exposure using the LCD? It seems to me that the brightness setting of your LCS screen would have to 1) be calibrated in some way and 2) would have to constantly adjust itself for current ambient light conditions.

You can increase the brightness on the 5D through the menus. Makes quite a difference from the default setting.

Nikon's LCD displays are like HDTVs compared to our Canons! Anyway, I moved from a decent LCD display (300D) to a really terrible one (1D) and haven't been hurt yet. I just use it to check histogram, and composition (to a certain extent, not really much).

At my first shoot with the 1Dino, I was really upset because the colours came out terrible on the LCD display. However, moved to my computer they looked fine, so I learned not to trust that ancient display =)

Thanks for your feed back guys....I depend on the LCD screen b/c I shoot in dark environments…I’m not asking for the “exact” image when I transfer it on to the comp but close enough so I can decide whether or not I can delete the image right then and there. It just screws me up looking at blurry (not sharp) image on the LCD screen and its fine on the comp….i don’t have a problem on my 400D tho...I did try the brightness on the histogram, and brightness on the LCD screen still my 400D looks a lot better….i even showed my co worker (another canon photographer) and he can clearly see the difference...i need to compare it to another 5D and do a side by side to see if its "normal" or if mine is defective..

I wouldn't be in such a hurry to delete pics right after you take them. Many can be PP'd and turn out to be great shots. That's why people shoot in RAW.
