LCD Monitor for photo-retouching

Hi,
I'm looking for a 19"/20" LCD monitor for photo-retouching.
I know that CRT monitor are better, but I have no room on my desk ...
Looking at some reviews, and also here, I found that LaCie 319 19" is a
very good monitor (it costs about 1000 EUR in Italy); it is a good candidate, though.
I've also read good things about the Eizo L887 20" that costs a bit less than LaCie, and is 20" agains 19" ... anyone has information about this one ? How it compares with LaCie ?
At the end, does anybody have other suggestions or informations ?
I need a good LCD monitor without spending a fortune ...

I may be wrong, but I believe that LaCie uses the NEC LCD panels, just repackages them and charges more, so I would look at NEC as a good candidate as well. I have heard great things about them. Other possibilities are Samsung and Apple.

I can recommend the Eizo's. I've had three in succession over the past three or four years and not had a single fault with any of them. Although not admittedly the L887, but in general terms they are very good.

I've read good things about the pro series viewsonics. I'm currently using a Dell Ultrasharp 2007wfp and I'm pretty darn happy with the results.

Yes I have one and it works great and handles 8 bits of color depth. I'm currently waiting for them to release a Pro Series widescreen around 20"~21" or get an Apple series. I've read too many iffy reports on the Dell's.

I can't compare to either of those brands though.

In a general rule of thumbs, from what I have read on a computer site that do LCD testing extensively, for photo retouching, you should go with a LCD from a reputable vendor, with a IPS or S-PVA/PVA panel.

And to be sure, just grab a Colorimeter for calibrating your monitor.
Better results than paying top cash on a non calibrated monitor.

The big trend these days, are 16:10 monitors, or wide screens.
Look in the 20/22" range. Some are good buys and not to pricey.
With some cash left over for the colorimeter.

Personaly, I run on a Samsung 215TW, 21" wide, 8bit color, 1000:1
And the ColorVision Spyder2 Suite is in the mail.

Check http://www.behardware.​com/ and read the Monitor part extensively.

SamSung LCD here, works great, prints match the monitor after calibration.

Thank you for your response. For what I've read about LCDs, IPS panels are the best for photography over S-PVA ones.
I don't know if all LCDs that use IPS or S-IPS panels are good ones, though ....

Once calibrated, they all look the same... nearly......
Just buy a good brand, and a good model.
Each brand has their low-cost and high-end models.

For myself, I tend to go high-end. And my old Samsung 17", which is
4+ years old, and cost 700$ at the time, sill has a better picture
than a brand new LG at 190$
