My collection is moving towards:
24-70mm f/2.8L (in possesion)
70-200mm f/2.8L (this friday)
Sigma 50-500mm f5.6-6.3 (as soon as the canon rebate/ income taxes get back)
100mm f/2.8 (within a month)
10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 (before the summer (in the adirondacks))

Not that Ive actually used the above lenses, or any lens at all other than number 1 and my previous wide angle zoom (and a few telephotos some passing photographers let me mess around with down in florida), but Im an impulsive buyer

and Id murder an onion for the sigma 300-800 (which I have actually used to my immense satisfaction)

and im sure id enjoy exploring my scolpendras with a 65mm canon (one of these years)

30D, Elan II, Hasselblad 500cm, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, 50mm f/1.8 II, Tokina 12-24mm F/4, Zeiss planar t* 80mm f/2.8, 430EX, Manfrotto 3021b + 3265, Hoya 77mm S-HMC Thin

I don't know if it could be done, but I think it would be great to have a bar graph of all the lens choices to see how many times each lens has been selected. Just curious, but not curious enough to go back and add them all up.

Google "Exposureplot". Granted, it only does focal lengths, but it will give you a very good idea of what you use. For me, it confirmed that now and forever I will be a zoom user. My plots, especially during fast moving events, are all over the place. Very seldom do I get to stay at one focal length.

Exposureplot seems to work with jpeg only.

I shoot mostly JPEG.

(flame war about "RAW is better" will not be entertained. Besides, what's a RAW converter for? (and I shot over 180 RAW frames today))

Oh, I meant nothing bad with that. Myself, I always shoot RAW, and I only "develop" to JPEG some of them (the ones I'll use on the computer or get paper copies of).

Oh, sorry, I wasn't talking about my lenses. I was referring to the choices everyone is making in this thread.

Forgot what I posted before, but I'll refine my list now:

For a 5D:

17-40L
24-105ish f/2.8L IS (some hypothetical full-frame equivalent to the 17-55 which would probably cost an arm and a leg)
70-200 f/2.8 IS
100-400

I'd probably want a prime too, but can't decide whether it would be a 50, 85 or 135L since I've only one 'slot' left.

I agree with this list completely (and it's what I have too) and suggest adding something wide, like either the 16-35mm f/2.8 or even the 15mm Canon fisheye (and either straighten in one of the zillion utilities which perform that operation, or learn to shoot subjects where such distortion is acceptable)

I just got the 35mm f/1.4. I was a doubter. No more. It's no Summilux ASPH, but it's not terribly far away optically speaking (which says a lot!), lacking only in size and weight.

Yes, I would agree that a good ultra wide zoom would fit in my original list of four but optically (more now than before) I found that zooms do not cut it for me. I have yet to find a need for an ultra wide prime. I may consider adding instead a tilt & shift prime to the list.

BTW welcome to the exclusive club of 35L owners. Only we would know how good these lens are! :-)

Cheers
Harry
