Tamron 17-50 terrible autofocus?

I've found that my tamron generally hunts a ridiculous amount and I get tons of out of focus shots when on AF..do any of you get this problem? Its really starting to frustrate me, my next lens will definitely be one with an USM. Am I doing something wrong or..?

In low light my Tammy tends to hunt a bit but other than that, no problems with it...

I had one and had no problems with it. Sold it to move to 17-40L and FF.

Check if it's possibly back/front focusing to rule that out if you can.

It seems likely you have a bad copy, check some more, than exchange it for a good copy where you bought it.

I hate to say it, but I think I get more in focus shots with my Tamron 17-50 than I do with my 24-70 L.

mine focuses just fine.. Not as quickly as my L but gets the job done..

What are you focusing on? If you try and AF on things without much contrast (smooth, evenly lit objects, maybe a black cat or any large expanse of colour etc.) pretty much any AF system will hunt as they need some sort of contrast to work.

Does it hunt in situations where your other lenses don't? Could be a faulty lens, of course, but it's nice to rule out other stuff first.

Can I just do this? I don't have a warranty for it, but I did buy it at a brick and mortar shop. Also, how do I check if its back/front focusing?

I don't know really what to compare it to. I have a nifty fifty and it seems to focus much better. As for what I am focusing on, just everything that I shoot in all types of settings, I get out of focus shots in tons of shoots when there's plenty of light.

I assume you're using the center focus point only and a shutter speed faster than 1/FocalLength and added a few f-stops for a wider depth-of-field in which case try shooting the center of a yardstick or ruler proped against the wall at 45 degrees and make sure the camera is focusing where you think it should and not somwhere else.
