If I had to make a request, I'd like smaller and lighter and I want them to bring back the 1/500th second flash sync. I have held on to my original 1D because of the fast flash sync. Well, that and the fact that a new one will cost me a lot of cash

But I do use and love that fast flash sync! Maybe I'm the only one...

From SportsShooters Web (external link):

Just at the final part:

->> New body and new long glass coming soon, announcement due on 24th feb, dealers in the UK have been told they will be told on the 23rd....

The new long lenses are rumored to have more/new contacts/connections which make them significantly quicker and they will also be lighter... the return of the 200mm is on the cards as well but maybe as a 200/2 not 200/1.8...

More firewood to the fire !!

Cheers

... the 2 new 1 series will be called 1d sport for the 1dmk2N replacement and 1d studio for the 1dsmkII replacement. Sounds logical to me.

God, I hope they merged these two camera lines together. It's a pain in the asterisk (and walltet) to need two bodies for doing studio work (a primary and a backup) AND need two bodies for doing any type of field work that requires speedy shutters.

Augh.... Please, Canon, tell me you see the logic in having one high-end professional grade DSLR. (Or maybe their logic is, "HA HA!!! You buy four camera! HA HA Mo money for us!")

I'm totally with you on this. A fast 8fps 16MP body would be a godsend for me as I'd be able to shoot news and sport as well as high quality stock with just two bodies rather than at least three.

If Canon abandons the EF line or won't support the EF line in the future, ala FD from the past. I will not be happy, nor will I ever use a Canon system again. How fast can we I say Nikkor? I will not have a closet full of obsolete lenses again.

Surely the new lenses would be backward compatible?

They weren't when Eos replaced FD, now Nikon may have all these crazy lenses but any F-mount Nikkor will mount to any F-mount Nikon. Granted you may loose aperture or AF function on some bodies. But with a camera like the D200 or D2, every single Nikkor will still function, even circa 60's manual Nikkors.

If the current crop of EF lenses are slowly phased out and not supported on newer DSLR bodies I will not be a happy camper. If we develope a pro-line and non-proline DSLR lens systems I might as well switch to Nikon, Oly, or Pentax.

That was a much bigger change though going from manual to autofocus. But then Nikon managed it. When you consider the dominance of EOS with news and sports photographers they would be annoying a lot of people with tens of thousands of pounds worth of glass.

"Annoying" is an understatement. Although I wouldn't abandon Canon for Nikon, I would definitely not be happy. However, I think we are putting the cart before the horse here.

I am very confident Canon executives and marketing strategists are wise enough to realize that a new high-end body (or any body, for that matter) must work with the existing EOS lens line. It would definitely be corporate suicide to alienate the entire market audience for your "flagship" camera line.

Although I do think the EOS lens line will be "fully retired" someday, I think that day is a long ways out.

If the Canon executives are smart, they would simply create a body with a few extra contact points (or a slight re-wiring of the existing patterns) that would be used by the (rumored) EF-x lenses and "ignored" by the EF lenses or EF-S lenses. This approach would give consumers the ability to slowly integrate the new lens line into our existing EOS arsenal (as our current lenses get damaged, etc).
