NHL Lens size restriction?

I'm going to watch the Penguins play the Rangers Saturday in Pittsburgh. I read somewhere that there is a maximum lens size, (<70 mm) that you can take to NHL games. Is this correct? I've searched the Penguins site, the NHL site, and this site but I can't find an answer.

Thank You
Frank

You need to contact the venue in question. The lens restriction is there to protect the professionals who shoot the game.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Good luck, i am still tring to get into hockey, don't know the league name but they are just below NHL. We have the Grand Rapids Griffen just down the road. They say 35mm, i had to sneek in the 70-200 to take pictures, i have written the league and the areana for permission and they won't even send me anything back. Not even a get lost.

I believe each venue has its own restrictions. I would just contact the place where you are going to the game.

Griffins are AHL. that's a pro league, but not the big money machine of NHL. so they may not be as snooty as an NHL team about photos, especially if you can offer them something in return -- say, game shots for them.

LA Kings will not let ANY camera with a removable lens in. Also total length of camers + Lens can't be more then ~ 3" I think.

The removable lens one killed it for me; so I stopped reading the rest. :(

I have taken my 300 mm lens in a Preds game at the GEC. They just looked in my bag and let me in.

I was checking the web sites for Bay Area teams (San Francisco Giants, 49ers, Oakland A's, Raiders, Golden State Warriors, San Jose Sharks). All allow cameras, no tripods or video, some allow monopods. The only one with camera restrictions listed on their website is SJ Sharks which limit lenses to 6" (must be a hockey thing). I would say that the teams here are generally photography friendly.

I went to SAP Tennis open at the Sharks' Arena a few weeks ago and brought my 200/2.8.

Once inside, I see a quite a few DSLRs on the stands and a couple of 70-200 whities too.

No one really care about the camera though.

What a joke! We used to have an ECHL team here. Baton Rouge Kingfish. I liked going to the games, could walk to the arena when I got off work. Can't imagine them being that restrictive. The ECHL doesn't even really play what I would call good hockey.

There does not seem to be a NHL specific policy on cameras and lenses. These are the policies at the two places I most frequently attend.

The RBC Center says: The use of and video, audio, or digital recording device is prohibited except for accredited members of the press. Still cameras (detachable lenses included) are permitted for Hurricanes hockey and NC State basketball games. Personal cameras may be used from ticketed seats and should not be obtrusive to other patrons. NO cameras are permitted for concert events (unless otherwise noted on the event page).

The HSBC Arena says: Buffalo Sabres/Buffalo Bandits games: Still cameras and video recorders are permitted. The cutouts in the glass are reserved for media personnel with credentials only. We ask that pictures only be taken from your seat, and that it not interfere with any other guest’s enjoyment of the game.

Got the policy for the Air Canada Center in Toronto:

The camera policy for the NBA states still cameras are permitted but the use of flash photography is strictly prohibited. Video cameras ARE permitted, but the use of still photos or video footage for commercial purposes without written permission from the NBA is prohibited.

The NHL camera policy allows for still cameras with a lens no longer than 75 mm to be permitted into the games. In addition, the use of flash photography is not permitted.
