Hey,

do you find that now that you have this solution, you would be using the 16mm end a lot less on your 16-35L?

Hell no! The 16-35L is STILL my bread and butter, baby. I still use the 16mm end a lot. The 15mm is for those times when I really need to get so much more in the frame and the 16-35L just won't cut it. Plus, it's still fishy even with the 1.3x crop, so it doubles as just a fun lens to have. Try it on for size.

Haha, that's funny. That's what I'm saying, except +1mm WRT the lenses.

17-40L is my workhorse, and I just picked up (again!) a Russian 16mm fisheye just to get that teeny little more into the frame

But that's just it, Kev. Once you correct the distortion you'll gain much more than just a mere 1mm. With distortion correction, the 15mm essentially becomes 12mm on a FF sensor and 16.5mm on the 1.3x crop cameras. If you factor in not using ImageAlign's automated adjustment after cropping the edges, you can wind up with a 10mm FOV on FF and 14.5mm FOV on the 1.3x crop!

Didn't read all the posts, but Iris software is a great for the circular fisheyes. And it's a freeware! Try it...works with my peleng shots.. :D check the astrosurf. com where you can find some use for your fisheye lense...

Has anyone tried the Tamron SP Autofocus 14mm f/2.8 Aspherical (IF) Rectilinear Lens?
its expensive, but maybe for a reason? The canon fishy does look great tho! Im just curious why this Tamron seems so mysterious!? anyone know anything about it? or do i have to be the first! ;p

@OP - Thx for this post, it is the reason I went the same direction. Haven't looked back, the lens is performing extremely well.

Unexpected upside: If you put the 15mm fisheye on a 1.6 crop body, it makes a nice walkabout lens, very portable, good for candids, especially indoors.

Thx for the post, great advice, and much appreciated.

EDIT: Imagealign is not available as an add-in for CS3 at this time. CS3 has a reasonable correction filter; you need to "eye it up" when working with it, but it performs well.

You're welcome, man!

BTW, I tried the plug-in on CS3 and it runs on my system. Albeit really slow and unstable, but it works. I don't rely on it though, and haven't had to use it much presently anyway. So I'm just waiting around for an update that's fully compatible with CS3.

ImageAlign is top of that heap; when the compatible one appears, I'll snag it.

In the meantime, the results speak for themselves -- that lens is very sharp.

Lordie be. Just happened on this thread again. Now that I've got 1.3, I'm missing my fish real bad. I'm jonesing for a FF again.

Can't wait for the new 1DsMKIII to hit the street. It'll definitely be in my christmas stocking.

Get a Tokina 10-17 fisheye zoom. At 12-13 mm it has a non-vignetting 180 degree diagonal AoV on APS-H... :)

Kind regards, Wim

The lens is good. No doubts there. I sold the original 15mm FE not long after I posted this thread to cover the cost of something else I really needed. However, it wasn't long before it was reacquired again. I couldn't stand to be without it once I used it, so back in the kit bag it went. LOL  ;)

ImageAlign is not currently compatible with Windows Vista or CS3.
