Good rum?

Kinda getting sick of Vodka, I had some Captain morgans a few weeks ago (the only rum I've had besides Bacardi), it was pretty smooth from what I can remember, quite a bit smoother then any vodka I think I've had (talking of course shots, not mixing, I don't even drink coke normally, haha.) I was thinking maybe bacardi 8 year old?
What do you recommend? My budget is flexible to about the cost of grey goose, but I'm not about to spend $100 on a 750ml bottle. This will be, of course, for parties.

Somehow giving advice on alcohol to a minor seems a bit odd.

I have no idea how to tell how old he is but remeber in canada its 18/19

if its for parties, and you're mixing it, just get the cheep stuff. crappy malibu comes in a bunch of tropical flavors that are good for the beginners, as youwon't appreciate a better richer rum anyways. Mojitos are very popular rum drinks and easy to make.

a random FYI, bacardi light has no sugar in it so its ok for diabetics.

we brought back a bacardi reserve that was $50 there, hand labeled and numbered. it sold for $300 on ebay

Also, if you could be more specific when you list your brands I'd appreciate it, seems to be a lot of different types of rum for each company.

I don't think there is any rum company that just makes one type. You just shop in your budget.

well you would sip a reserve like grand marnier / brandy. a flavored one like Malibu or the new ones from capt morgan could be shots.

want a challenge, try bacardi 151, its the highest proof drink available. pretty much like hot nails going down. Illegal to take on a plane its so flamible.

Right, usually the names represent the price, color, quality.

Your best bet is to go into a liquor store and just look, ask for help. Any of the brands I listed should be found in most LCs. Start with the cheapest of those brands (some not cheap) and aquire the taste first.

Yeah. I was going to get that, but they don't sell small enough bottles for myself, and somone will get hurt at a party.
I whine about unsmooth vodkas, I'll die from 151.
And I don't believe it's the highest proof drink, maybe just available in Canada (ontario I know) / most parts of the States. There is everclear for example, other overproof rums that are like 95% as well, and heck, even my friend the other day showed me his grandfathers 95% israeli alcohol which he (his grandpa) drinks.

What's the difference between reverse and all this stuff?

I'm looking for something very very smooth for shots, maybe with a nice taste.

I think you will get better results from google. There will be quick answers that explain it from a alcoholics standpoint instead of a photographers :P

Unless we have some resident alcoholic photographers up right now...

LOL. I did a quick google but it was a lot of product results.
Honestly, photographers and alcohol have little to do with eachother, except your personal life, and photo taking of bottles (plus, I'm sure somone here has been hired by a company to do some product photos for them for some alcoholic beverage.)
My camera never goes with me if I am drinking or am around drunk people. I sort of want to get a P&S for those fun nights actually.

Well, as a qualified submariner, I happen to be experienced in rum. I really like Sailor Jerry's. It has a little different flavor and a bit more alcohol. Not exactly the easiest to drink straight, but it is great mixed. It sports the artwork of the famous artist it is named after. It is made with cherries. Good stuff.

Everclear is 190 proof, but illegal to buy in some states.

Anything more generic (easier to find)
In Ontario you can only buy alcohol from the LCBO (liquor control board of ontario), they have stores all over the place.
They do not sell a lot of what's been recommended including sailor jerry's.
