OP: Right now I'm torn between the 5D and 30D. My skill level is still very much amateur, however I often find my self in far less than perfect settings. Those darn animals just refuse to be found in good lighting!

This statement is crying out for the high ISO capabilities of the 5D. I don't think I'd really trust the 30D to give clean shots at 800ISO, something I'd happily ask the 5D to do.

Let's be realistic. The 30D at high ISO is no slouch.

These aren't my photos, but they're good examples.

go over to dcresource and check out the shots taken at 800 ISO and I think you'll be very impressed. Minor, if any, differences between the 30D and 5D at 800. If you really want to appreciate the 30D while you're over there take a look at the Nikon d200 at 800 ISO - Yikes!

From everything the OP has stated, the 30D is the right camera to get.

I just re-read the OP post. You do have a good point. It's just hard not to recommend the 5D after just upgrading from an XTi. And I have no business speaking against 30D as I have not had the pleasure to use it yet. :)
