I've seen first hand what too much alcohol can do to a person. Too much is a very subjective, and unfortunately, unknown quantity - until it's too late. Alcohol dulls the senses, fogs the brain, blurs the eyes, kills brain cells. In retrospect I can't imagine why anyone would purposely do that to themselves.

I find it very strange that if I'm offered a drink and decline the comments range from 'What's wrong with you?' to 'Oh, another goody-two-shoes>?'. If I say no thanks, I'm a recovering alcoholic the comments tend to be totally accepting.

So does most any pain meds, especially statins.

Too many in my family drink like fish. I grew up with it all around me, constantly. Maybe it's why I want nothing to do with it.

I overheard our son (age 35) commenting to a friend about drinking. He said 'If I never have the first one I'll never become an alcoholic'. I'll tell you it brought a smile to my face. Keep avoiding it - it's just not necessary.

I lost my father to liver disease accelerated by his heavy drinking.
Let me tell you, it is a heart breaking sight when the liver is gone and it can't cleanse the body. Even a little amount of salt intake results in water retention...and I mean RETENTION...while the rest of the body loses muscle.

The specialist said to me "One glass of wine is fine. The normal liver won't be able to handle too much beyond that and you end up killing liver cells. Liver cells regenerate but not exactly as it was before. It's kind of like how the skin regenerates itself after a cut, but it hardens. The same thing happens to the liver. Too much of the scarring leads to eventual liver failure, cancer, etc..."

I guess it isn't called "The Silent Killer" for nothing...

Don't drink and drive...and think about what excessive drinking will do to your liver. Because you'll find out when you are 50 or 60. My dad was 60 when he passed away.

Jack and Coke. Is there really anything else? A good cigar and your set.

I only know of one place where that is true and it isn't Vegas.

That's not true in most of the US anymore. There are very few blue laws left on the books, and very few dry counties.

The problem here in the US is that we see alcohol as a vice, and we don't teach our children how to drink responsibly. One drink will not make you drunk or impair your decision making skills if you are of reasonble height and weight.

Same here in Canada. Instead, we just tell them to not drink. Like that does much.
For serious liver problems, I think (i'm no doctor or student in this area of expertise though), you would need to drink for many many years, on a regular basis (say a few beers every day or something.)

One of the biggest problems in both Canada and the U.S. is drinking among college students. Binge drinking is a major issue. I'm no pshycologist, but the freedom of college, turning old enough to drink, and the immaturity of that age adds to the epidemic. I agree with Mark C.- saying "don't drink" isn't a solution- like all things in life, teach moderation and responsibility. Cheers.

Tequila makes you crazy! and if you mix beer and hard alcohol correctly, things do work out well.

Actually I think the problem is that we don't teach by example. One drink might not make you drunk but it does impair your decision making skills by a small amount. For some that small amount could be enough to fail to say no to the next one.

Why do we (and the alcohol industry) stress the need for a designated driver? Why do we stress not drinking and driving? Why not just not drinking?

This is true, after enough drinks, and the right person (and maybe even just anybody), you can without an automobile injure somebody else and yourself.
I like to drink with people I trust and whom I know are decently responsible, in an closed environment (i.e. a friends basement.)

I am a Jack and coke guy too.... with a splash of lime. I am sorry but the average sized man or woman is not impaired from one drink, that is just silly!

I'm a cider 'n' black man! :D Never liked beer or lager, and I only drink spirits or hardcore alcopops ( hehe) on occasion.

Best of all? I have a liver condition, but I know my limit. ;)

I think you tend to go in phases - in high school and the first two years of university I was all about the rye (Canadian Whisky to our American friends). Then I went on a rum kick for a few years. Gin and tonics came next, which naturally led me into martini's after that. I skipped the vodka stage entirely(unless you count that one unfortunate incident, which has been succesful in steering me away from it).

Now I'm onto scotch. I'm mostly a single malt guy. Cragganmore, Genmorangie, and Talisker are my favs. But I do have an extra special bottle of Johnny Walker Blue on hand, for when I have some super duper occurance to celebrate.

I've also 'discovered' the joys of a good bottle of port shared with a close friend along with a couple Cubans.........beautiful.
