I've been experimenting with my EF 50 1.4 USM that I recently purchased and must confess I think it has issues. It's not quite as sharp as I expected. I'm not sure if I am just paranoid or whether I need to send it back. The Bokeh is dreamy but in the focal range it seems lacking in sharpness. But hey, I'm an ameture!

The photo was taken wide open at f1.4 and I've done nothing to the image other than resize. As far as a difference between stops? I shot from a tripod at every stop up to f22 and could see very little difference in sharpness, only slight variations in exposure.

It certainly doesn't appear sharp in that picture. Does it have a plane of sharp focus at all? Very pretty background. Sharp or not, it's pretty.

Good question. I think I am going to try shooting some 2D test patterns. At least then I will know if I am on plane or not. Thanks for the comment. I do like the way the flowers in the backround look.

Ok,

So I've read many threads and more pages of this thread than I should admit to... and I'm still confused! Is this good... or bad, bokeh?

And if you would be so kind as to explain why it is good or bad, I would be eternally grateful!

I don't really like this guy but his article on Bokeh isn't bad. Worth a read and will answer your questions.

Mike,
Thanks for the read. After reading, and looking again, I'm going to say that it is pretty good bokeh. I'm not seeing sharp edges, but there is definitely identifable spherical shapes. But then again, I could be sooooo wrong!

It isn't the worst I have ever seen.:) There are a few highlights in each of the first three photos that have some sharp edges. These shots are pretty small and harder to tell. If you look at the original at 100% magnification it might be easier to discern. All in all though they don't seem to take away anything in the image which is a good thing.

The best advice I can give you though is to not get caught up in worrying about your bokeh. If you know the limits of your glass then you can make any picture work for you.
