Too Bad. If I had purchased the 24-104L prior to my other lenses, I may not have bought my other lenses. For me it has been a stellar performer!

Glad you have faith in the old faithful 28-105mm. Mine was taken on tripod with mirror lock on and at 10 sec. Will be trying out with my new 70-200mm 2.8 L ISM next year as this temple only lights up once each lunar year for a comparison.

I am also aiming at the 24-105L. Anyone has some samples using this lens. Interested to check out the outcome.

Thanks for all your input. As I said in my post, I plan to go try one locally. I'm sorry if I inconvenienced anyone with my complaining, was just a bit frustrated and thought this was the place to talk about it, my bad.

Please report back your results of another 24-105 test, I think this would be an excellent general range on a FF or 1.3 crop, but it is a little slow and has received some negative feedback. Problem is, I don't see any other high quality lens with matching focal length.

I know the feeling. The excitement of a new lens, a lot of money and then a huge let down when you don't see the sharpness you were expecting. Unfortunately, that risk is there with any lens.
I was just considering a post describing my disappointment with the 17-55 I bought two days ago. All shots have been handheld and I've been comparing it with my 24-70 under the same conditions and lens settings.
The 24-70 wins easily every time.
I've heard a lot of good reviews about the 17-55 so I'll try for an exchange. If I'm still disappointed, I'm going to have to upgrade to the 16-35 since I really want the f2.8 not the f4 of the 17-40.

Good luck, dlw

Hi dlw;

Really sorry to hear of your experience - I have a vested interest in your story!

I just aquired a 24-105, and haven't had time to give it a good test run yet. (Today it's hosing-down - so little chance of a run out...) It's first outing is going to be a "live" test - on vacation next week...

Anyhow, as a matter of interest; when you reviewed your files, were you looking at the "in-camera" processed JPEG file, or RAW?

I have found that many images look "soft" when looking at the JPEG file, but the RAW is perfect.

I have no idea how the in-camera algorithms work, so don't know what effect they have, but I do know that dependant on the subject matter some JPEGs come out perfect, whereas others need PP work on the RAW file.

Good luck with swapping the lens...

Cheers;

Lee

I get plenty of sharp shots with the 24-105. Here is one from a recent workshop.

Sorry to hear of your problems. Assuming you are not expecting too much from the IS you should get very sharp results; My 24-105 is very sharp even compared to other very good lenses.

It may be you had a bad copy or one that needed calibration, although the is the first bad experience I have heard of this lens. Usual comments about using a tripod, mirror lock up and cable release. Also turn off the IS when testing although it should work OK on a 'pod it is best to eliminate variables.

Try exchanging it for another if you are sure it is not finger trouble.

I have the 24-105 for use on my 5D. I've found it to be able to provide amazing clarity in shots - it is an excellent lens and a great companion lens to the 5D.

Please show us your shots that are in question complete with EXIF data.

This lens is brilliant, I've loved since I took the first shot with, its very sharp....beautiful...could I suggest that you look back over all your settings and take the lens out again....I would be amazed if the lens was at all faulty......

I just shoot the large jpegs out of the camera with no post processing(photoshop) or touch up.
I want'em as I took'em......so hopefully I won't be diasappointed.

Seems okay in the house on a 'pod.(i shut down IS) couldn't see much point with it active.

This is indeed the place to talk about it. But you know the old adage: Pictures speak louder than words. With NO samples posted, your post is basically worth little if anything.
