How do you Fly with a Tripod ?

I'm flying to Hawaii next week and I decided take my monopod and tripod with ball head. Before I run out and spend money on a tripod bag I wanted to seek the wisdom of POTN.

Do you put it in checked baggage, or take in the cabin, or ....?


I already have the Tamrac Expedition 7, but I can probably have one of my sons carry them!

I check mine in my suitcase.

I've heard that a broom works better for some than a tripod.

Or even a hot air balloon. Anyhow when traveling to Alaska, I just put mine in with my luggage, taped to a footlocker with strapping tape.

Mine rides in my checked baggage. It is insured.

OP - I'd check with the airline first to see if you even have the option of carrying it on as hand baggage.

Checked in baggage, in its bag and wrapped in a towel. No fuss.

Speaking from experience, yes, yes they do... especially the jet-turbo brooms.

OP query: I put mine in checked baggage, when I fly.

check it in my suitcase and wrapped up betwen clothes so the carbon fiber does not get any dings.

I strap it to the outside of my pack or else put it inside - it is the Gitzo 1258 with BH40 that is about 22" long (carryon size).

My tripod is strapped to the side of my camera bag. My carry on easily fits in the overhead.

I fly at least twice a week. No one has ever questioned my tripod.

btw - I fill the legs of my tripod with model rocket engines! Works great!!!

Yes, it is sometimes odd what the TSA cares about. Neither the TSA or anyone from an airline has ever said a word. Occasionally, the TSA wants to swab something inside the case when I go through security, but that's it.

I first tape the ends of the tripod so they don't poke my wings and then I fly!
