That's a great way to fly, Rusty. I use a larger tripod so I had to check it in the last time I went to Hawaii. No worries though, because you really don't need much clothing there so there's plenty of space in the bag.:D

now that the cockpit doors are secured, TSA is much more worried about explosives than other 'weapons.' They were even talking about allowing knives with blades <4" back into carryon luggage last year.

When checking with Ryanair recently, they refused my tripod to go on with hand luggage. I suggest in the suitcase as others have suggested

Ryanair don't even like you taking a bl**dy suitcase, and charge you if you are 0.25 of a kilo over your limit... bunch of %*&^%£&^'s (IMO) they treat you like cattle, and I totally refuse to fly with them again.

Sorry, rant over... :-)

I take mine strapped to my carry on bag. Never had any problems which certainly surprised me the first time I did it.
I had to hand over the eybrow tweasers to security but a tripod was OK..............go figure.
Must have thought I was going to pluck the pilot to death.

Cheers
Trish

Yes, it is sometimes odd what the TSA cares about. Neither the TSA or anyone from an airline has ever said a word. Occasionally, the TSA wants to swab something inside the case when I go through security, but that's it.

Yes, a pool cue is a potential weapon according to TSA, whereas a tripod is not. Makes you wonder what they think about a monopod   I suspect someone knows one of those trick shots whereby you can bank a billiard ball against the flight attendant's bulkhead seat cushion and take out the pilot and copilot and flight engineer with the same ball while they have opened the cockpit door to pass a cup of coffee.

Like others, I have put my tripod inside my checked luggage well wrapped with clothing for some trips. On other trips I have removed the ballhead and put that in my carryon, then put the tripod into a cushioned cardboard 'tube' into checked luggage.
